Rhine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The wider Rhine valley ends at the confluence with the Main and the Rhine then enters a more narrow valley, which widens again south of Cologne.
The name "Rhine" from here on is used only for smaller streams further to the north which together once formed the main river Rhine in Roman times.
From here the situation becomes more complicated, as the name "Rhine" no longer coincides with the main flow of water.

 Rhine River History and Maps
East of Frankfurt is where The Rhine-Main-Danube Canal links the Rhine with the Danube River, providing a transcontinental route from the North Sea to the Black Sea near Odessa, Ukraine.
The Rhine begins as a tumultuous Alpine stream churning through deep gorges, and although the river's flow is moderated somewhat as it passes through the Lake of Constance (Bodensee), the river remains a torrent westward to Basel.
The Rhine flows over into Austria, but most Austrian wine is produced on the eastern side from north of the Danube to the southern border.

Cruising along the Danube (also into the Black Sea), Main-Danube Canal, Rhine, Moselle, Oder in Poland and Germany, Elbe, Northern Italy's Po Valley and the South of France, riverboats offer stretches of daylight cruising and stop at cities and villages often within walking distance of the dock.
Amsterdam to Prague via the Rhine, Mittelland Canal and the Elbe; Trier to Budapest via the Moselle, Rhine, Main-Danube Canal and Danube; and combinations using two riverboats between Amsterdam and Lyons and Hamburg and Passau.
Dining takes place in a two-seating main restaurant; a beautiful, intimate reservations-only Vierjahrezeiten restaurant (no extra charge); and informally in the Lido Gourmet.

Danube - Oder - Elbe Association
The construction of this branch will be very similar to the first stages of the R-M-D link (canalization of the river Main between Aschaffenburg and Bamberg and the river Danube between Kelheim and Regensburg).
The construction of it can be compared with the central part of the R-M-D link (Main-Danube canal from Bamberg to Kelheim).
It should be constructed predominantly as a man-made canal, only shorter section of it can be realized by canalization of the river Oder.

 The old Danube-Main-Canal in Essing
The most difficult problem was to overcome the European watershed separating the two river systems, Altmuehl and Main or Danube and Rhine respectively.
Charlemagne was the first to realize the idea of a watercourse between Danube and Rhine via Altmuehl.

The Commission is obliged to work on the unification of all navigational conditions on the Danube with regard to the specific conditions in some river sections, including pilot services, utilization of hydrometeorological and hydrological data, collection of statistical data about shipping, and issuance of navigational aid.
Production of the most environmentally friendly energy by hydroelectric power plants is the main advantage of the project and would enable substitution of several classical coal power plants or one old nuclear power generator, if fully implemented.
