The area of North Wales known as Ardudwy is a coastal region hemmed in between the Celtic sea and the Rhinog mountains.
Inland, beyond the Rhinogs is some of the bleakest uplands of North Wales in the Arenigs. This narrow fertile strip of land contains the towns of Barmouth, Maentwrog and Harlech, together with several smaller villages and hamlets.
Pedantically speaking the strip of land beyond the Rhinogs to the main road running from Dolgellau to Maentwrog is also part of Ardudwy, upper Ardudwy.

The Rhinogs (south Snowdonia) are some of the quietest mountains in Wales as they are often overlooked in favour of the higher summits to the North.
The Rhinogs themselves, Rhinog Fawr (720m) and Rhinog Fach (712m), are in the middle.
The Rhinogs are fantastic for wild camping (which is why we are going!), offering views of both mountains and rugged coastline.

 Rhinogs, January 2004
I've walked the Rhinog ridge three times in the last year and met only three people on the mountains in all that time, a more magnificent sense of isolation is impossible to achieve on this island without travelling to Scotland.
Gus seized his opportunity and, with digital camera in hand, crept up on the noisy bird like the perverted stalker he is. Closer and closer he crawled, belly flat to the frosty heather, until the beast filled his viewfinder when, with victorious cry, he snapped a photo.
The Rhinogs were coy in revealing their views and cloud descended to cover the top 200m of the peak as we climbed.

Starting from a car park near the A470 in Coed-y-Brenin forest, the route climbs easily to a sheltered camp about 6km away, and poses no problem being tackled in the dark.
The second day involves some 500m of climbing, taking in Rhinog Fawr, then to a wilderness camp by Llyn Du (7km) or a sheltered camp in the forest (9km).

The ascent of Rhinog Fach starts at a wall gap and crosses a rock field to a thin loose stony line in the heather, which climbs very steeply to the first tier of crags and improves as the angle eases.
