| | Birth time decides the mating seasonality in primates |
 | | Several factors, such as photoperiod, temperature, rainfall and vegetation, endogenous circannual rhythms and social synchrony (Vandenbergh, 1973; Van Horn, 1980; Lindburg, 1987), have been argued as proximate or ultimate factors governing the mating peak. |
 | | However, Based on our three-year observations of matings and ten-year records of births in captive Sichuan golden monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana), and on consulting all studies for which reproductive phenomena were the primary focus, we propose that the birth time is a more likely cause of the mating peak in primates. |
 | | Sichuan golden monkeys have been kept in the Beijing Breeding Center of Endangered Animals since 1987. |
