Conservation Frontlines: China Shows Commitment to Golden Monkeys
But we are very concerned about the future of Vietnam's only Rhinopithecus, the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus avunculus), now down to about 300 animals due to habitat destruction and hunting pressure for food and medicinal purposes.
By employing some of the same methodologies developed by the Chinese to help their golden monkey populations – long-term research, ecotourism, a strong commitment to establishing protected areas, and preventing hunting – we may be able to succeed in Vietnam as well.
Golden monkeys of China (Rhinopithecus roxellana) live in groups of 300 or more in temperate forests located as high as 13,000 feet.

Hai Dong Thang | The Rufford Small Grants for Nature Conservation
The Tonkin snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus (Presbytiscus) avunculus) is a slender-bodied, sexually dimorphic, arboreal, critically endangered primate, endemic to northern Vietnam.
The primary goal is to elucidate information on the species’ social organization and behaviour, feeding ecology, and habitat and range use.
The information gathered will result in conservation and management recommendations for the species and its habitats and further add to the body of knowledge on the genus Rhinopithecus as a whole, and on R.(P.) avunculus specifically.

It is known for its large protophyte forests, the only well-preserved primitive forest ecosystem on the same latitude in the world, as well as for its endemic golden monkey (Rhinopithecus brelichi) population.
Some 1,100 people live permanently in the core area and 15,000 in the buffer zone of the biosphere reserve (1999) which is situated in one of China’s poorest areas.

Such a paper leads to confusion, and a lowering of confidence in the scientific merit of the entire book, which reflects somewhat unfairly on the other authors.
Also unfortunate are the large number of typographical errors, particularly in evidence in Judith Caton's paper (whose otherwise intriguing analysis of stomach characters links Pygathrix with Nasalis and Rhinopithecus with Procolobus).
The book contains a valuable synthesis by Craig Kirkpatrick on the ecology of Rhinopithecus and Pygathrix, which includes a very useful appendix of weights and measures.

Birth time decides the mating seasonality in primates
Several factors, such as photoperiod, temperature, rainfall and vegetation, endogenous circannual rhythms and social synchrony (Vandenbergh, 1973; Van Horn, 1980; Lindburg, 1987), have been argued as proximate or ultimate factors governing the mating peak.
However, Based on our three-year observations of matings and ten-year records of births in captive Sichuan golden monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana), and on consulting all studies for which reproductive phenomena were the primary focus, we propose that the birth time is a more likely cause of the mating peak in primates.
Sichuan golden monkeys have been kept in the Beijing Breeding Center of Endangered Animals since 1987.
