Salt management in Rhizophora mangle and Avicennia germinans (Final)
Rhizophora mangle is often the most seaward-growing species of mangrove in Caribbean and Atlantic mangrove forests (SMSFP 2001b).
Rhizophora mangle is considered a non-secreting salt excluder because it excludes salt from entering the roots and lacks glandular secretory structures.
Physiological responses of the mangrove Rhizophora mangle grown in the absence and presence of NaCl.

Unasylva - No. 139 - Mangroves: What are they worth? - Mangroves what are they worth?
Rhizophora is especially popular because its wood is heavy, burns with even heat and gives off little smoke.
Rhizophora is usually cut after 20-30 years, but in dense private plantations for firewood and poles, rotations may be as short as 7 years.
In the early 1950s up to the 1960s the mangrove forest of Sabah was one of the sources of revenue and an export commodity in the form of firewood, charcoal and tannin.

 MANGALS
This is a red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, on a protected Atlantic coast of Florida, near Fort Pierce.
In the neotropics these forests are either mixed species of Rhizophora, Avicennia, and Labuncularia, while farther inland in zones of higher salinity, forests may consist of monospecific stands of Avicennia, as shown here in Puerto Rico.
Note the forest floor is covered by the pencil shaped specialized root structures known as pneumatophores, which help in the exchange of oxygen with subterranean roots.

Lack of chromosomal homology appears to be contributing to high percentage of non-viable pollen resulting in complete sterility in the putative hybrid.

mangrove trees in general: info fact sheet, photos
Rhizophora send out roots from their trunk and branches which arch down to the ground (right) for extra support and air absorption.
Most mangrove trees lack a heartwood and instead have narrow vessels that are densely and evenly distributed throughout the wood.
This is the case with Avicennia (right) and the seed coat of its fruits drops away more quickly in water of the right warmth and salinity, usually in a spot best suited for an Avicennia seedling.

On the Andaman coast, in Phang-Nga province, the mangrove forest has about 50% of its total width under the tidal range and the Important Value Index of Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata and Sonneratia alba at 20 m from the sea was found to be more than 50%.
On coastal areas with a width of between 250 to 360 meters and a tidal inundation of about 130 to 200 meters, Rhizophora mucronata had an IVI of 70.2 and 89.3 at 20 and 60 meters respectively.
But conversely, Rhizophora apiculata had an IVI of only 44.3 at 20 meters, and a higher IVI of around 131.5 to 175.4 between the levels of 60 to 340 meters.

Landscape characteristics of Rhizophora mangle forests and propagule deposition in coastal environments of Florida (USA)
The purpose of this study was to examine the potential distance of dispersal of Rhizophora mangle propagules by comparing deposition density with landscape characteristics of mangrove forests.
Propagule density was estimated at various distances to mangrove sources (R. mangle) on beaches in southwestern Florida in both high-and low-energy environments, either facing open gulf waters vs. sheltered, respectively.
