Broughton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The surname Broughton is often associated with the landed gentry of those Broughtons in Cheshire and Buckinghamshire.
In the County of Chester, the Broughtons descend in the male line from Hugh de Vernon, baron of Shipbroke at the time of the (Norman) Conquest, whose son, Richard de Vernon was father of Adam de Napton, county of Warwick, whose issue assumed their local name from Broughton in Staffordshire.
In the county of Buckingham, at the time of the Domesday survey (1086), the principal manor of Broughton was held by Walter Giffard, Earl of Buckingham, and cousin of (William) the Conqueror.

 A School Story
Rhoda Broughton's "The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing But the Truth", first published in 1873 in Tales for Christmas Eve and reprinted in Twilight Stories, 1879, is a beautifully written, fictional tale based quite closely on the 'facts' in the case of 50 Berkeley Square.
Told in a sequence of letters between two deliciously gossipy ladies, one of whom has just obtained a house in Mayfair at a remarkably cheap rent, it includes all the essential ingredients except for the sailors' adventure.
That MRJ was familiar with the work of Rhoda Broughton is unquestionable.

Cholmondeley's first book was published under the title, Her Evil Genius and shortly thereafter in 1886, her second work The Danvers Jewels earned her a small, but respectable following.

Just as Mirage, as literal travelogue, may be read in terms of a figurative journey into the realm of difference, Constance's love-quest may be read in terms of another story: a fantasy of being loved by Wilde.
The fantasy appears a resonant one: Other acquaintances of Wilde - Rhoda Broughton and Henry James (both clearly aware of Mirage) - would later rewrite the story, each inserting an alter-ego (Broughton's female, James's male) as Wilde's object of desire.
Fletcher's original version, however, is particularly striking in figuring sexual difference in geographic and ethnographic terms.
