Rhoda Scott : Encore, Encore, Encore... - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Organist Rhoda Scott has been living in France for the last few decades, and this set of standards was recorded there in 2002.
Scott has always favored unusual groups, either a trio with drums and sax or a duo with a drummer, and here she is paired with veteran French percussionist Lucien Dobat.
Even though this is Rhoda Scott's show, it would be nice to hear her partner her step out of the nightclub shadows a bit.

Official Ticketmaster site. Shirley Scott tickets, dates
Scott, a very melodic and accessible player, started out on piano and played trumpet in high school before taking up the Hammond B-3 and enjoying national recognition in the late '50s with her superb Prestige dates with tenor sax great Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis.
Scott wasn't as visible the following decade, when the popularity of organ combos decreased and labels were more interested in fusion and pop-jazz (though she did record some albums for Chess/Cadet and Strata East).
Though known primarily for her organ playing, Scott is also a superb pianist -- in the 1990s, she played piano exclusively on some trio recordings for Candid, and embraced the instrument consistently in Philly jazz venues in the early part of the decade.

Rhoda Scott grew up a minister's daughter and attended the Manhattan School of Music, beginning her career in NY before moving to France more than 30 years ago.
Scott is known, in part, for her distinctive bass lines (most organists play a bass lie on the lower of the Hammond's twin keyboards) created by holding down the bottom using her bare feet on the organ's pedals--something she picked up playing in her father's church.
Scott made her Bay Area debut back in 2000 at Bimbo's in one of the many B3 showcases engineered by Fallico for the San Francisco Jazz Festival.

Scott is one of the best of a rare breed -- a jazz artist who works magic on the obsolete Hammond B-3 organ, an instrument that's no longer being manufactured.
It was Fallico who invited Scott -- along with exceptional Parisian drummer Lucien Dobat -- to come to the Bay Area for a round of performances, including last weekend's gig at Copia.
Both sets opened with Scott and Dobat offering amazing instrumentals, with the "barefoot contessa" (her fans have given her this nickname as she performs barefooted) regaling the appreciative crowd with material that ranged from her own catchy "Charlotte's Waltz" to the classic "Frame for the Blues" from trumpeter/bandleader Maynard Ferguson.

But with her 50th album, Encore, Encore, Encore (Sunnyside), Paris-based Rhoda Scott has brought plenty of attention to her important role on the B-3.
The 12 tracks are evidence that Scott is a master at the organ tradition, while putting her own stamp on the legacy, often performing solo as the “Barefoot Lady,” a moniker she received due to her barefoot pedal work.
Except for Scott’s original “Do What ‘Cha Gotta Do” and Johnny Griffin’s blues “Sweet Sucker,” all fo the selections on the album are American popular standards.
