 Woonsocket Industrial Highway (RI 99)
Across the border in Massachusetts, state officials announced plans for a "Woonsocket Connector" that was to connect I-495 (Outer Circumferential Highway) near EXIT 18 (MA 126) in Bellingham with downtown Woonsocket.
The four-lane highway was to be constructed within a reduced right-of-way of only 150 feet, with the remaining right-of-way to be preserved as a "greenway." Opposing traffic flows were to be separated by only a concrete ("Jersey") barrier.
In its 1971 planning report, the RIDOT stated that the northern terminus of the Woonsocket Industrial Highway "must be situated and aligned to accommodate a further extension north en route to an ultimate connection with I-495 in Massachusetts." Such a plan would have been coordinated with the "Woonsocket Connector" plan developed by the MassDPW.

Sources of Sodium and Chloride in the Scituate Reservoir Drainage Basin, Rhode Island
In 1990, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT), in cooperation with the Providence Water Supply Board (PWSB), adopted the use of a 60:40 mixture of calcium chloride and sodium chloride, mixed with sand, in place of sodium chloride and sand, on State-maintained highways in the drainage basin.
This practice was expected to reduce the sodiumapplication rate to these highways by approximately 40 percent, and thereby lower the sodium concentration in the water supply (Rhode Island Department of Administration, 1988).
On average, State highway-maintenance crews applied twice the amount of sodium and four times the amount of chloride per lane mile during WY 2000 than did municipal roadmaintenance crews, although application rates varied greatly from town to town within the drainage basin.

 The Interstate System
Though the adoption of the US highway system in 1925 brought some improvements to the road system, these improvements were inadequate, particularly outside urban areas for people traveling long distances.
On June 29, 1956 under Eisenhower's administration, the Federal Highway Act created the system that we now formally call the "Dwight D. Eisenhower System of Interstate and Defense Highways." One of the problems with the US highway system was getting states (which often balked at the construction costs) to support the system.
