Rhodes enrolls approximately 1650 students and is often ranked in the top tier of the annual US News and World Report list of the best American liberal arts colleges.
In 1945 the College adopted the name Southwestern at Memphis, to distinguish itself from other colleges and universities containing the name "Southwestern." In 1984, the college's name was changed to Rhodes College in an attempt to give the school more prestige and to honor former college president Peyton Rhodes.
Rhodes enrolls 1,677 undergraduate students; 86% are Caucasian, 5% are African American, 3.5% are Asian and 1.25% are Hispanic.

The program was offered in the spring of 2000 (for faculty new to the College of Liberal Arts faculty in the 1999-2000 school year), the fall of 2000 (for faculty new to the CLA in the 2000-2001 school year), and the spring of 2002 (for faculty new to the CLA in the 2001-2002 school year).
The Rhodes Consultation faculty discussion group and IRG project created time and space for much-needed conversations concerning the meaning of the church relationship in the midst of wholesale transformation in the college's self-identity and sense of mission.
Although 17 of 52 college faculty were involved in the campus discussions Kevin sponsored during the 2000-01 school year, they revealed that the faculty morale was low, communication with the administration and board poor, and the future of junior faculty in doubt.
