Rhopalocera (~20.000) are diurnal butterflies characterized by their club-like antennae, while Heterocera are all the others, most often nocturnal but not always.
Superfamily: Hesperioidea, one of the 3 superfamilies of Rhopalocera: Hesperioidea (Skippers), Papilionoidea (Butterflies proper) and (the neotropical) Hedyloidea ("Butterfly moths").
This superfamily consists of one single family with about 3700 documented species (most of them in the tropical regions) with the following charcteristics in common: The head is unusually broad and thick; they have strong wing muscles giving them powerful flight; yet they remain true to their habitats, few of them known as migrants.

As the sixth volume in F.N. Pierce's series on the Genitalia of the British Lepidoptera, "Rhopalocera" was published in 1941.
Though they are regarded as invaluable for identifying difficult species, the originals are not easily available, and the reprinted versions were considered inferior in quality.

Rhopalocera (~20.000 documented species) are diurnal butterflies characterized by the club-like ending of their antennae, while Heterocera are all the others (~130.000 documented and ~230.000 altogether), most often nocturnal but not always.
In Sweden there are ~2700 Lepidoptera-species of which 121/122 belong to the Rhopalocera (enough to keep track of!).
Except for having club-like antennae and being more colourful and "grander" than the Heterocera, the Rhopalocera are also characterized by the way they place their wings when resting or hibernating.

The most of species has been recorded in northern Velebit (100), 67 in middle Velebit and in southern the least (60), that shows that the last two areas are unsufficiently researched.
Also, the zoogeographical analysis of fauna Rhopalocera in Velebit and its geographical parts (northern, middle and southern Velebit) has been given, which showed that in fauna Rhopalocera of Velebit the eurosibirian species is dominating (Tab.
Comapison between faunas of horthern, middle and southern Velebit points out the higher level of similarity between the faunas of northern and middle Velebit than between the faunas of middle and southern Velebit, even more so between northern and southern Velebit.

Rhopalocera   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-12)
Although the rules for distinguishing these groups are not completely hard and fast (see Difference between a butterfly and a moth), one very good guiding principle is that butterflies have thin antennae and (with one exception) have small balls or clubs at the end of their antennae.
Moth antennae can be quite varied in appearance, but in particular lack the club end.
The divisions are named by this principle: "club-antennae" (Rhopalocera) or "varied-antennae" (Heterocera).

The search of imago was carried out with regard to ecological peculiarities of these insects: on the flowers of herbaceous and wood plants, on heated substrate, on humid soil of the roads in hot weather.
Butterflies were captured and registered by visual route method in different time of the day on the glades, meadows, rock fields, forest edges, forest roads and other localities and secondary biotops.
The important result of the studies is the fact that the complex of a high number of Rhopalocera species with approximately equalized numbers of individuals in the populations is included in to the natural environment with primary flora and fauna.

The present paper reports a study of Rhopalocera flight patterns and meteorological fluctuations at Donner Pass (Placer County) — a typical Canadian Zone area in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California.
The senior author (T. C.E.) surveyed the area in 1956, delineating vegetation zones and general Rhopalocera distribution and activity in the various habitats.
Thus it is that butterflies and plants come out together as soon as bare ground appears, and the flight or growth seasons are measured in weeks instead of months.

There are undoubtedly many more species of flies and smaller insects than are yet known, but beetles and butterflies/moths are larger, more easily studied, and therefore get more attention in the entomological community....
Lepidoptera can be divided into sub-orders Rhopalocera (butterflies) and Heterocera (moths) - There are some 26000 species of butterflies, and over 110,000 species of moths known.
The Rhopalocera - Heterocera distinction is far too simplistic, and newer more comprehensive taxonomic schemes have been proposed and are widely followed.

However, the moth is not classed scientifically as a separate group than the butterfly.
