Thomas Holtz (University of Maryland) has created the following mnemonic for the proposed new Proterozoic Periods:
For: Siderian Rhyacian Orosirian Statherian (Paleoproterozoic); Calymminian Ectasian Stennian (Mesoproterozoic); Tonian Cryogenian Ediacaran (Neoproterozoic).
Phil Plummer CGeol writes: "During my university days (a quarter of a century ago!) the following mnemonic was used for the mineral hardness scale: The Gem Cutters From Adelaide Must Queue To Cut Diamonds, the minerals, of course, being Talc, Gypsum, Calcite, Fluorite, Apatite, Microcline, Quartz, Topaz, Corundum, Diamond."
