CANOE -- JAM! Movies - Artists - Ifans, Rhys: A man of extremes
Rhys Ifans, the comic Welshman best known as Hugh Grant's insane roommate in Notting Hill, just does not play by the rules that govern other emerging movie stars.

Interview: Rhys Ifans by Elizabeth Weitzman: The actor with a mad poet lurking inside - This Month's Cult Movie Man - ...
"Comedy is at its mast effective," declares actor Rhys Ifans, "when it's at its most subversive." He should know: As the star of the current Human Nature, Ifans wickedly colludes with writer Charlie Kaufman and director Michel Gondry in pulling the rug swiftly and surely out from under their audience.
Welsh-born and London-based, Ifans is best known for providing a proudly lowbrow antidote to the blinding star wattage in Notting Hill (1999), as Hugh Grant's perpetually unwashed and underdressed lout of a roommate.
As Puff, a man who's been raised as an ape in the wild, Ifans is trapped by scientist Tim Robbins and forcefully "socialized." Like Kaufman's script, Ifans' turn is almost too slippery to grasp; the same could be said for this mad poet of a performer.
