I like rhythm parts that have a lot of riffs, passing notes and so forth, and I like solos that are rhythmic and have a lot of two and three-note stuff going on.
Oh yeah, and rhythm riffs are where it's at, and IMHO that's what's missing from a lot of drivel on the radio today- Instantly recognizeable, effective rhythm riffs that identify each song and set it apart from every other song on the album.
The rythm guitarist in my band used to have a problem that he would sometimes stick little phrases in, often at a time when they shouldn't and usually it wouldn't be melodic...it wasn't like a melody it was more like a nervous tick...like too many notes, nothing clear.

In the context of jazz and rock music, and to some extent country music as well, the role of a rhythm guitarist is more or less confined to strumming chords.
In the context of this study, however, rhythm guitar is defined much more broadly, so as to include a variety of styles of play that are based on chords.
Equal emphasis is given to styles of play in which the strings of the guitar are struck with a pick (flatpick styles) and to styles of play in which the strings are plucked with the thumb and fingers (fingerstyles).

Rhythm and lead guitar question - GuitarLodge.com Forums
When I first started playing, it was explained to me that "rhythm player" and "lead player" were ranks like "corporal" and "seargent" which everyone had to graduate from on the road to guitar mastery.
Personally, my whole approach to music is improvisational, so I would go and find a "guitar player" (not a "rhythm player" or "lead player") to start with, and let his ability and flexibility define his role, and whether he is right for the type of sound you want your band to have.
Or he might be an unimaginative rhythm player with a wonderful sense of melody, in which case it might be worth keeping him and getting another guitar player to add some rhythmic depth behind the melodies.

Gaynell assumed marketing responsibility for Roy's newly formed Delta Rhythm Kings band, recognizing that "he wanted to stick to his roots of blues and rock, and to do it in a very grassroots way." She also shared parenting of Sam, Roy's young son by his first wife.

Best Rhythm Guitarist - Just Plain Networking Forum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Rhythm guitar is a talent largely ignored by the public, but musicians understand how important the role is. The term is hardly used any more, and at one time was a kind of euphemism for "a guy who isn't good enough to play lead, so we let him play chords 'cause he's a good singer.".
But as one-third of a trio, he had to play a lot of rhythm, and he developed a hybrid lead/rhythm style that was impressively musical in its approach.
That's right there's no bass that means that his rhythm ability has to be top notch because there isn't a bass in the background keeping the rhythm going.

He decided to begin writing instructional materials due to the difficulty encountered by guitarists at playing good sounding chord forms in rhythm sections and due to the poor note reading ability prevalent among guitarists.
