The area was settled by the ninth century, when a small area in the middle of the Realtine Islands either side of the Rio Businiacus was known as the Rivoaltus.
The Rialto became an important district in 1097, when Venice's market moved there, and in the following century a boat bridge was set up across the Grand Canal providing access to it.
Most of the buildings in the Rialto were destroyed in a fire in 1514, the sole survivor being the Church of San Giacomo di Rialto, while the rest of the area was gradually rebuilt.

For a long time the Ponte di Rialto was the only footbridge over the Canal Grande; the Ponte dell'Accademia was not built until 1854 and the Ponte Scalzi near the station is 20th century.
The first wooden bridge was built on this spot as early as 1180, later to be replaced by a drawbridge which collapsed in 1444 under the weight of a crowd of people who had gathered to watch a boat procession.
Designed by Antonio de Ponte, the bridge is supported by 6,000 piles on each side and its single arch is 22m/72ft in span and 7.5m/24ft high.

This is, of course, largely down to ATI lacking a 'bridge chip' which allows them to run their native PCI Express cores on an AGP interface and vice versa.
Although the image is doesn’t make it clear it appears that ATI are mounting the RIALTO bridge on the underside of the board, presumably to reduce the amount that repositioning the main graphics core requires if the bridge is on the front, as we have seen with NVIDIA’s discrete bridged boards.
The difference is that ATI will be bridging their PCI Express products back to AGP in the main, whereas NVIDIA were doing the opposite upon the introduction of their bridge chip.

Looing at B3D's latest article it seems the Rialto bridge is quite large - larger than the HSI chip.
Doesn't answer your question about which bridge chip is technologically superior, but in this case I think the strategies were more financially driven.
I mentioned Maxx because a similar situation happened then, and by the time they had the bridge chip done (to support Win2k/xp) they decided that the market window had closed and it never did see the consumer space (that I'm aware of anyway).
