It is the administrative centre of Lancashire, and is on the River Ribble.
During the Roman period the road from the Setantian port of Neb of the Nese passed one mile north of Preston and intersected the road from Languavallium in Cumberland to Condate in Cheshire in Preston at Tulketh-hall.
Served by the River Ribble, Preston was one of the principal ports of Lancaster.

Ribble Steam Railway, who are building a museum on the city's docks, are joining forces with the Ribble Vehicle Preservation Trust for two days.
The preservation society will be operating some of their restored Ribble buses to and from the University of Central Lancashire to the railway museum in Chain Caul Road, Riversway, for two open days in January.
Bill Robinson, secretary of the Ribble Vehicle Preservation Trust, based in Freckleton, near Preston, said: "We must have 40 vehicles of which about seven or eight are fully restored with MOT and tax.

A larger scale map than in part 14 - the bridge shown in the first photograph is at the eastern edge of this map.
The Ribble Link Trust worked hard for this to be the basis of a new length of canal, to join the Lancaster Canal, north of Preston, to what is now known as the Rufford Branch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
These will be on display in a purpose built museum, or used to pull trains along the 1.5 miles track of the former docks railway.

My 10 ton Aveling and Porter steam roller was built in 1900, Works number 4505, and it’s rated as a 5 NHP machine.
I am lucky enough to be involved with the Ribble Steam Railway at Preston and was able to carry out the work inside the carriage shed.
The hydraulic and steam tests were completed towards the end of 2004 and I’m now back on the road looking forward to the summer.

David Gibson was able to demonstrate, during the journey, his extensive knowledge of the North Staffs Railway in the area as well as other past industries in the Churnet Valley, all a complement to his photographic archives.
The last visit from the “Steam Railway” editorial staff with a view to writing an article was by Tony Streeter, their features writer, in the summer of 2000.The result was being an excellent write up in Issue No 250 in the October of that year.
A very basic station facility was established in a static railway coach for several years before an exact replica of the original station building was erected in 2000.

IT was full steam ahead when more than 500 rail enthusiasts rolled up to the Ribble Steam Railway Museum, Preston, at the weekend.
Renovated tracks by the museum, in Chain Caul Road, Ashton, provided a viewing area, and visitors even got a chance to go in the workshop where engines are restored to their former glory.

The Ribble Vehicle Preservation Trust provided vehicles for services from the LAP car park to the British Commercial Vehicle Museum at Leyland and to the Ribble Steam Railway with vehicles carrying good passenger loads throughout the day.
The RVPT's exhibition bus made its rally debut, former Ribble 381 was loaned to the Leyland Society for the day to form part of their hospitality / rally control area.
