  Ribbon Falls Waterfall
Ribbon Falls is thought to be the largest single-drop waterfall in the United States.
Ribbon Falls is born with the melting of the winter snow each spring as it comes down from the mountains.
Ribbon falls has managed to become ensconced in a small niche in the cliff side so that visitors to the park must stand on a lookout on the south side road that is just opposite Bridalveil Falls.

Ribbon Falls is the highest free-leaping waterfall in Yosemite, and California, and North America, and one of the highest in the world.
It plunges down the cliffs west of El Capitan, almost opposite Bridalveil Falls, ensconced in a narrow amphitheater of its own making that ensures it can only be seen from directly in front.
It is fed by a tiny stream, and disappears soon after the last snowbanks in the valley rim forests have melted away.

Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the falls of the Blackwater River whose amber-colored waters plunge five stories then twist and tumble through an eight-mile long gorge.
The "fl" water is a result of tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles.
The falls are one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia.

Ribbon Falls falls in thin ribbons, from an opening above down on a domed rock, shag carpeted with soft moss.
It was a pleasant surprise and we talked with her some more as she came down from cooling off beneath the Ribbon Falls.
We took a nap behind the shade of the falls and had a lunch of beef adobe in tortillas.

The falls consists of two main leaps, 25' and 10, one fast on the heels of the other, then a long fan or horsetail cascade hundreds of feet down the rocks through lush blue-bells.
Ribbon Falls is 100 yards west of the trail at this point, out of the woods and into the valley.
Fern Falls is the only one which is a worthy destination in itself, but the valley stretches from high in the ice-carved heart of the Park, sparkling with beautiful glacial lakes, all the way to the bottomlands of Moraine Park.

Since 1998, four falls were buried under tons of rock — the result of egregious negligence by the contractor working for the Rubio Canyon Land and Water Company.
The lower one is Ribbon Rock Falls and the upper one is Moss Grotto Falls.
Ribbon Rock is now only a fraction of its former glory (see old photo compliments of Paul Ayers).

Following a series of speeches about what the massive structure will mean to local commercial development, elected officials climbed aboard a trolley for the inaugural ride across the span.
Included in that job will be the construction of a habitat conducive for walleye spawning near the southern end of the causeway.

Ribbon Falls - A garden spot in Bright Angel Canyon halfway to Phantom Ranch; it is well worth the few minutes from the trail.
Just upstream after crossing the bridge to go to the lower falls there is a steep track up the slope to the upper falls area; rarely visited except by the locals.
North Rim temperature in the morning was about 35°; when we reached Ribbon Falls it was over 90°.

Once you come near to creek you can hear the clear sound of the fall though it is not visible, you can still follow the trail or you can cross the creek and find your own way to the fall.
Or you can climb the 60-100 feet canyon wall on the left side of the canyon (you don't need any rock climbing skills) and once you are at the middle of the wall its dead end after this as it is vertical wall.
Ribbon falls is a small water fall that gives an ideal opportunity to get wet.

Ammonite Falls on Benson Creek was a particularily pleasant discovery.
To get to Ammonite Falls first drive along Jinglepot Rd. Turn onto the road with the sign for Benson Photography (you can turn only one way), then turn right onto Jamieson Rd. Follow Jamieson until it curves 45 degrees to the left, and a yellow gate is in front of you.
You will see a path marked by a pink ribbon (and a red and a blue ribbon last time I was there) that goes up the hill.

The trail to Ribbon Falls is about one mile south of Cottonwood and from there it's only a half mile to the falls.
The trail to Ribbon Falls is not maintained and you have a choice of either using the footbridge to the north or fording Bright Angel Creek further south.
From the junction of the trail to Ribbon Falls the trail meanders along the east bank of Bright Angel Creek for about 4 miles until you each the north end of The Box, where the walls of Bright Angel Canyon begin to close in on you.

We were done by probably 7:20 and after a few minutes visit to the restrooms we were on the North Kaibab Trail and on our way to Ribbon Falls.
We hadn't seen any other people on the trail all morning and there was no one at Ribbon Falls so we had the place to ourselves for the hour and a half that we were there.
There is simply a slope that you can scramble up to gain access to Upper Ribbon Falls but it is not marked and aparently not heavily used.

The two falls were called Ribbon Rock and Moss Grotto and the surviving photographs show a fairly precarious wooden stairway climbing them on the left.
A water pipe was suspended above these falls on the right and there was a shelf (spanned by the water pipe) on the right above the circular pool.
By some odd chance the platform where the backhoe was perched survived and sat there at the top of the slide path for several months thereafter, ironically revealing the cause of the catastrophe to any who might happen by.
