		Negotiations between the two governments to settle a decade-old separatist dispute have run aground over the fate of seven Moldovan-language schools in Transdnestr, two of which were recently shut down by authorities there in a campaign criticized as "linguistic cleansing" by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
		The six were part of a group of about 50 protesters, including students, who had occupied the building to prevent its closure by authorities in Transdnestr, who say Moldovan-language schools have refused to register themselves with regional authorities.
		Television footage showed authorities in Ribnita, 120 kilometers northwest of Chisinau, taking down a sign identifying the school as a Moldovan-language school and replacing it with one that said it was a Russian school.

		Since then, authorities have made good on their threat and, backed up in some places by local militia, have seized and sealed up several schools in places like Benderi, Tiraspol, and Ribnita that are attended by an estimated 5,000 children.
		The most recent closure was an orphanage in Benderi, where, on 25 July, more than 50 children who had been away at camp were prevented from entering the building and had to spend the night outside, sleeping on the pavement.

		Tens of trade union members from the education system in Romania gathered yesterday in front of the Russian Embassy in Bucharest to protest the treatment applied to the teachings staff in Tighina and Ribnita and demanded support from the authorities of the Russian Federation to have Romanian schools re-opened in Transdniester.
		Three men from the group of six arrested for resisting the occupation of the Romanian high-school in Ribnita by the Transniester Militzia forces were set free on Monday, according to a BASA-press report quoted by Mediafax.
		One of the three, Victor Saracuta, said that the other three would be kept in detention for four more days.

		The next day the blocking of rail links was indeed expanded to that town, which is mostly under separatist control although is located on the left bank of the Dniester.

	OSCE Feature - Moldovan Mission seeks solution to Dorotcaia's bitter harvest
		The village, although situated on the left bank of the Dniestr, is under the control of the central authorities in Chisinau.
		However, Dorotcaia's fields lie east of the road linking Tiraspol, the administrative centre of the breakaway Transdniestrian region, with Dubasari and Ribnita further north - in territory under the de facto control of the Transdniestrian authorities.
		Out of the combined 11,000 hectares of farmland belonging to Dorotcaia and five other Chisinau-controlled villages on the left bank, around 6,300 hectares are located on the Transdniestrian side.
