  Ribosomal Protein Gene in Yeast
Ribosomes are involved in the synthesis of proteins in cells, and can occur in three main subcellular locations - the cytosol, the endoplasmic reticulum, and the mitochondria.
The protein is involved in the synthesis of proteins.
The study of the effects of changes in ribosomal proteins is a very important one, as ribosomal proteins are extremely far "upstream" in cellular pathways.

 RPL24 - ribosomal protein L24
Upon digestion of the complex formed from the 23-S ribosomal RNA and the 50-S ribosomal protein L24 of Escherichia coli, two fragments resistant to ribonuclease were recovered; these fragments contained RNA sections belonging to the 480 nucleotides at the 5' end of 23-S RNA.
The k(cat) of peptidyltransferase from mutants lacking ribosomal protein L24 was decreased 3-fold to 0.69 min(-1), whereas the k(cat) from mutants lacking L39 was slightly increased to 3.05 min(-1) and that from mutants lacking both proteins was 1.07 min(-1).
A cDNA encoding ribosomal protein L24 was amplified by PCR from the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma brucei.

InterPro: IPR000266 Ribosomal protein S17   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Ribosomes are the particles that catalyze mRNA-directed protein synthesis in all organisms.
The ribosomal proteins catalyse ribosome assembly and stabilise the rRNA, tuning the structure of the ribosome for optimal function.
The small ribosomal subunit protein S17 is known to bind specifically to the 5' end of 16S ribosomal RNA in Escherichia coli (primary rRNA binding protein), and is thought to be involved in the recognition of termination codons.

The Protein Structure Initiative is a database that "aims at determination of the 3D structure of all proteins." When searched, it is found that YmL28 has structural similarities with a vast number of proteins, probably due to the small sequence provided.
The question about ribosomal function could be answered by tagging a certain protein made by the mitochondrial ribosome with a radioactive or fluorescent marker, then letting the yeast grow on a medium and testing for the presence of the protein.

Human protein: P62244 - 40S ribosomal protein S15a. EMBL Bioinformatics Harvester
Ribosomes, the organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit.
