Wagner's musical style is often considered the epitome of classical music's Romantic period, due to its unprecedented exploration of emotional expression.
Wagner quickly embraced this claim, which must have resonated strongly despite its direct contradictionwith his own arguments, in "Opera and Drama", that music in opera had to be subservient to the cause of drama.
After Wagner's death in 1883, Bayreuth became a meeting place for a group of extreme right-wing Wagner fans that came to be known as the Bayreuth circle, endorsed by thestaunchly anti-Semitic Cosima.

Joseph Joachim - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, when he moved to Hanover in 1852, he dissociated himself from their musical ideals, and instead became friends with Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms (who sometimes accompanied him at the piano in recitals).
His musicianship also had a significant influence over the orchestral music of Franz Liszt and Ricard Wagner, exemplified by the proximity of the violin parts to Joachim's composition style.
Wagner's Walkürenritt, from the opera Die Walküre was a perfect example of Joachim's influence.

Wagner's antisemitism and his links to Nazism are topics tackled head-on by his great-grandson, Gottfried Wagner, during his visit to Australia.
Clearly for Wagner it wasn’t just a quirk of his character, it was sort of integral to the way he viewed his art.

 Review by Paul Berenson
The LA Opera's "Lohengrin" of Ricard Wagner is an interesting production by Maximillian Schell that mixes modern elements with traditional and a heavy dose of symbolism.
It has elements of the spaciousness of "Tristan" and "Parsifal," a hint of the leitmotiv, especially in Lohengrin's theme and the swan, but none of these are developed like in the "Ring" and the later operas.
Wagner is best played when you don't really notice the music, but it's just part of the total effect of the drama unfolding before you, and it becomes part of you.

Nietzsche saw ancient Greek theater and the multi-media experience being introduced by his contemporary and friend Ricard Wagner as an intermediate medium to fill in the moral void through art inducing people toward higher goals; modern cinema is that prediction realized.
Expanding on the multi-media 'experience' pioneered by Wagner, the cinema conveys the legends and myths of our culture in the storytelling traditions used by many pre-mass media technology societies from the Celts to the American Indians.
A major factor impeding the recognition that human behavior derives from biologically physical cause and effect processes, is the understandable, yet irrational, emotional reaction of equating the concept of social Darwinism with its 'misapplication' during World War II which resulted in the holocaust tragedy.
