CD Baby: RICASSO: Suck It Up
Ricasso's last effort Pollution contained a track that received the award before its official release as well.
In fact the name Ricasso, sort of a rock'n'roll version of one of his favorite painters, was adopted to keep him out of the principle's office for his graffiti art.
After High School, Ricasso began drumming with numerous rock and pop bands whose prime objective was to eek out a meager living and in the spirit of Rock'n'Roll, out-party the locals in every watering hole in the from Vancouver to Winnipeg.

A new technique of placing ones finger on the ricasso to improve the grip (a practice that would continue in the rapier) led to the production of hilts with a guard for the finger.
The term is a recently-coined calque of the Italian spada da lato and will not be found in any actual sources from the 16th or 17th centuries.

These large swords provide ample distance to keep foes at bay, but the long ricasso allows the blade to be gripped, which shortens the reach of the sword while improving maneuverability in close quarters.
The fact that the grip is now "longer" due to the addition of the ricasso length makes this style of fighting more effective with thrusts and smaller, quick cuts.
When shortened by grasping the ricasso, it does not cut as well (as mentioned earlier, the grip becomes too long to make large cuts), but it still managed to make large slices and gashes very well.

You can see the ricasso in the larger photo if you look carefully, by the way the light is reflected from the metal - the gleam on sharp edges is perceivably different from that on blunt ones.
There does seem to be some blade geometry difference in that "ricasso" section but it might be the picture, or it might be that even if there is blade geometry difference, the section is still relatively sharp, or at least slanting towards blunter edge.
This could be due to the difference in the blade geometry (either a true ricasso or just less sharpened or worked on strong of the blade), or unintended lighting tricks during the photography.
