Riccardo Paletti (June 15, 1958 - June 13, 1982) was an Italian Formula 1 driver, born in Milan.
Paletti's Formula 1 career is among the shortest of all drivers, as he fatally crashed on the start grid in one of his first real Formula 1 starts.
Paletti sustained heavy chest injuries and was lying unconscious in his car, wedged against the steering wheel.

Riccardo Paletti did make it in his Osella and having qualified but not started in Detroit (because his team mate Jean-Pierre Jarier took the car) he was keen to well.
But Raul Boesel (March) clipped the car and bounced across the road and behind him Paletti ran straight into the back of the Ferrari which was then punted across the track and into Lees's Theodore.
It took nearly half an hour to get Paletti out and he was then helicoptered to hospital but there was little hope and he died two hours later.

Riccardo began racing at 19 in Italian SuperFord, but soon graduated to Formula 3 and then, after just 15 F3 races, made the big jump into Formula 2 — albeit briefly — at the end of 1979.
Back for more at the end of 1980, Paletti drove sensibly within his limits and, with the benefit of winter testing, he joined the Onyx team full-time for 1981.
In a gruesome accident, Paletti suffered massive internal injuries and he died in hospital shortly afterwards.

Paletti the already damaged Ferrari, the Osella diving under the Ferrari gearbox, and tossing the heavily damaged 126C2 into the Theodore of Geoff Lees, adding another car to mounting carnage on the track.
