 Barton County, Part 1
Russell County adjoins Barton on the north, on the south is Stafford County, on the east a portion of Rice and Ellsworth counties, and on the west a part of Pawnee and Rush counties.
As showing the adaptability of the county for farming purposes, it may be stated that the wheat crop of 1877, averaged twenty bushels to the acre sown; in 1878, the average was twenty-three bushels, and in 1882, the average was twenty-six bushels to the acre.
Barton County was, prior to 1872, attached to Ellsworth County for judicial and revenue purposes, but having, in that year, the requisite number of voters, and the population required by law, to entitle it to organization, a petition was presented to the Governor, asking that the county be organized.

On November 7, 1871, at a general election of the county, in which 98 votes were cast, E. Jones, who was also deputy county surveyor, and practically in charge of that office, was elected superintendent of public instruction for the county.
He proceeded to organize the county into 26 school districts, only five of which were able to have any school during the winter of 1871-72.
At her death, April 24, 1879, the county commissioners appointed C. Silver, a merchant of Lyons, to fill the vacancy until the next general election, and in November, 1879, Mr.

 History of Lyons, KS
Rice County is on the route of the old Santa Fe Trail, which was surveyed in 1825.
The county was named in honor of Brigadier General Samuel A. Rice of the U. Volunteers, a Civil War hero who was killed at the battle of Jenkins Ferry.
In 1876 an election determined that the county seat should be located in the exact center of the county and the city of Lyons was established there, being named for the owner of the property upon which the new town was built.

The first marker replicates a stone post inscribed with the single word of CHAVEZ placed at this location in the pioneer days of Rice County.
To get to this marker, at the south edge of Lyons, Kansas on K14 highway is American Road, go 2 miles south, turn left and proceed four and one half miles east to the marker on the left or on the north side of the road.
