Rice was grown on 230 acres as late as 1972.
The county ranks consistently among the top twenty-two of the 110 rice-producing counties and parishes in the U.S. As Missouri acreage increases, the distribution is shifting to counties east of Crowley's Ridge.
The Missouri Rice Research and Merchandising Council bought thirty acres in 1990 and an additional 40 acres in 2002 for the Missouri Rice Research and Demonstration Farm two miles east of Glennonville on J Highway.

Born in Wood County, Ohio, August 28, 1841; family moved to LaGrange County, Ind., when he was a small boy, where they lived until 1854, thence went to Geneseo, Ill., thence to Warren County, Iowa, 1856; to Paola Kan., 1869, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits until locating in Rice County.
He was elected County Treasurer of Rice County in the fall of 1880 and re-elected in the fall of 1882.
Went to Livingston County, Ill., in 1854, and lived until 1862, and enlisted in Company B, One Hundred and Twenty-ninth Illinois Volunteer Infantry; participated in all the battles of his command and was captured near Goldsboro, N. in 1865; confined in Salisbury, N. C., until May 1, 1865.

This is actually not rice at all but a tall aquatic grass of North America (Zizania Aquatica L.), with a grain, two or more times the length of the long grain rice of Asia, and the grains are typically a brown-fl color when it is a cultivated crop.
Steve said that when he first started growing wild rice, he was preparing the soil in the early spring with special equipment that does not get bogged down in the mud, because wild rice needs a slightly flooded area to grow in.
The crop is harvested with a “grain combine,” that separates the rice from the stalk.
