This lake is fairly shallow and was named for the wild rice which grew in it and was harvested by native people of the area.

One visible remnant of this earlier period is the rotten piles lurking in the water between Harwood and Hiawatha, where a rickety railway bridge crossed the 3 miles from Harwood to Hiawatha, to serve a railway from Cobourg to Peterborough.
But Rice Lake enjoys much deeper historic distinctions, as it is located along an ancient waterway used by Native peoples for thousands of years, to travel from Lake Ontario to Lake Huron, or vice versa.
Rice Lake's aboriginal history goes back 2000 years to a people who were permanent enough to build burial bounds of serpentine shape, today found on the north side in Serpent Mounds Park.
