  Film Review: Rice Rhapsody: ThingsAsian
Rice Rhapsody is as squeaky clean as the city of Singapore itself, a pristeen clean that infuses the film with an ethereal glow.
The cast is equally appealing to the eye, and sincere in their heartfelt portrayal of a struggling single mother and her three devoted (if sometimes disappointing) sons.
Rice Rhapsody is sweetly satisfying, but much like an episode of Yan Can Cook, it will leave you hungry for a taste of his food.

Veteran Hong Kong actress, Sylvia Chang, is Jen, the protagonist in Rice Rhapsody, a mother's account of coming to terms with her sons' sexuality.
While Rice Rhapsody may be a comedy, the stereotypical portrayal of gay characters comes at the expense of further mystifying the so-called "gay lifestyle".
One can read into the subtext of Rice Rhapsody by comparing the dominating mother, Jen, as the state; and her sons, as citizens, trying to break free from the restrictions imposed on them.

Rice Rhapsody centers around mother-hen Jen Fan (Sylvia Chang) who runs a Hainan chicken rice restaurant and follows her trials and tribulations as she copes with two gay sons and a maybe.
Using Sabine as a convenient catalyst, Rice Rhapsody then presents the first successful — albeit temporary — gay reparative therapy in Singapore by having Leo (no!) engage in under-aged sexual intercourse with the aforementioned French hussy (arrest her!).
For all its flaws, Rice Rhapsody remains the only Singaporean movie which focuses on homosexuality as its main theme and attempts to capture the juxtaposition of traditional familial values as represented by Jen and their antithesis as represented by the alternative lifestyles of her gay sons.

Asia Pacific Arts: Filtering Asian Cinema
An immediately likeable film, Rice Rhapsody is the sort of crowd-pleaser that whets the palate for Asian cooking mixed with family melodrama.
Not only do both films star Taiwanese actress Sylvia Chang, but both are about a traditional-leaning parent who is a cook whose glory days are fading, and is conflicted by the modernizations of his or her three children.
The Ang Lee connections continue: In Rice Rhapsody, Sylvia Chang’s two oldest sons are gay, and she makes it her mission to make sure her youngest son doesn’t go that route.

 Rice Rhapsody
Translated literally to English as Hainan Chicken Rice, or South Sea Chicken Rice, Kenneth Bi's 2004 polish galore rides the food angle in a manner a bit too reminiscent of Ang Lee's Eat Drink Man Woman, with the two having more than culinary delights in common.
However, despite these pros Rice Rhapsody in the end culminates in a flat, unremarkable experience that won't stay with you very long, unlike other products in its range, like excellently emotional Yi Yi (2000).
Probably more than this though, Rice Rhapsody comes in handy for watching with your mom or sisters during one of those family afternoons we get once in a while.
