History of Bristol County Part 3
Richard D. Borden was elected president of the corporation in 1874, on the death of his father, Colonel Richard Borden; and in 1876, when his brother, Thomas J. Borden, resigned as treasurer, Richard B. Borden became treasurer, and Thomas J. Borden president.
It all began with the industrial foresight and preparedness of John B and his sons Richard and Joseph, who in their enterprise acquired lands from Benjamin and Caleb Church, from both sides of the Quequechan river, in the early part of the year 1700, with the control of all the water power in that section.
Richard Borden was chosen president of the corporation, and Thomas J. Borden treasurer and clerk.

 The Dean You Don't Know
What Dean's speeches and Web site don't say, however, is that the architect of Dean's economic record was Richard Snelling, a socially liberal, fiscally conservative governor who publicly criticized the Reagan administration's deficit-creating policies in the mid-1980s—and was duly ostracized by the Reagan administration for doing so.
But the imprint behind Dean's economic philosophy and record can be traced to one man: Republican Richard Snelling, the self-made millionaire turned five-term governor.
Snelling proposed three rates—pegged on income—and then revoking those increases when the state retired its deficit.

 Howard Dean
When Snelling died, Howard Dean was in his fifth year as lieutenant governor, and we were at least superficially acquainted with him, but we had little notion about the scope of Dean’s ambitions or what kind of governor he would make.
In fact, he was seeing a patient when he learned that Snelling had died, and it was part of the lore of that historic moment that Dean finished his appointment with his patient before heading for Montpelier to become governor.
For Vermonters, the shock of Snelling’s death was considerable, and it was magnified by the uncertainty we felt about his successor.
