Professor Adler was a major contributor to extensive revisions in electrical engineering education that were made in the 1950s and again in the 1960s.
In the early 1960s, after the invention and adoption of the transistor, it became evident that the golden age of vacuum-tube electronics was ending, and the age of solid-state electronics was beginning.
Professor Adler was awarded the prestigious Education Medal by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 1986 for "leadership in engineering education through teaching and textbooks in semiconductors and electromagnetics." His brilliant career ended abruptly in 1990 when he was struck by a car while jogging, and died of his injuries at age 67.

Adler's television musicals Little Women, Gift of the Magi, and Olympus 7-000 were critically acclaimed and his commercials, created for major, corporations, won Best Commercial of the Year three years in a row from the National Advertising Association.
Adler was commissioned to compose two ballets for the Chicago City Ballet: Emmy award-winning, Eight by Adler in 1984, which starred prima ballerina Suzanne Farrell (currently being presented annually by the Fort Worth-Dallas Ballet), and Chicago, a jazz ballet.

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Professor Richard B. Adler '43 died Tuesday morning after he was hit by a car while jogging in Concord.
Adler, as technical director of the international university-industry Semi-conductor Electronics Education Committee, which he established, led the effort in the early 1960s that first brought transistor-based solid-state electronics into undergraduate engineering education.
Adler is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and his three sons.

The son of a concert pianist, Adler was not attracted to classical music, and studied to be a writer at the University of North Carolina before spending three years in the U.S. Navy.

CHAPEL HILL -- Broadway composer and lyricist Richard Adler, writer of standards including "You Gotta Have Heart," will tell stories and perform hits from his classic musicals in a Nov. 9 benefit show for his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Adler, honorary co-chair of the Memorial Hall Transformation Campaign, will share a medley of his hits -- including "Rags to Riches" (Tony Bennett, 1953) and "Hey There" (Rosemary Clooney, 1954) -- through video and audio tapes and his own singing and storytelling.
"Richard is a legend, truly a great star, on the order of Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hammerstein," said George Ann Bissett, director of the Memorial Hall campaign.

The Commission's Complaint, filed in August 1994, alleges that the defendants unlawfully traded or tipped others to trade prior to an announcement on November 25, 1992 that top officers of Comptronix had perpetrated a financial fraud which caused the company to overstate sales and profits in prior and current years.
The Complaint alleges that Adler, then a Comptronix director, learned of the fraud on November 15, 1992 in confidential board meetings and shortly thereafter tipped Pegram, his business customer and friend, who in turn tipped his business associate, Domer Ishler, as to the fraud.
The Court declared a mistrial and subsequently granted renewed motions for judgment as a matter of law as to Adler and Pegram and summary judgment as to Ishler.
