A new error analysis for Brun's constant
Arenstorf of Vanderbilt University published a proposed proof (26 May 2004) of the twin-primes conjecture.
Arenstorf used analytic continuation, the complex Tauberian theorem of Wiener and Ikehara, and other advanced techniques of classical analytic number theory in an attempt to prove a related conjecture of Hardy and Littlewood which has the twin-primes conjecture as a corollary.
The latest updated count of the twin primes, and the corresponding estimates for Brun's constant and a definitive error bound, may be found at http://www.trnicely.net/counts.html.

These are now known as "Arenstorf Periodic Orbits." In 1966 he received the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement.

On May 26, 2004, Richard Arenstorf of Vanderbilt University submitted a 38-page proof that there are, in fact, infinitely many twin primes.
Arenstorf withdrew his proof on June 8, noting "A serious error has been found in the paper, specifically, Lemma 8 is incorrect".

A Slashdot post pointed me to this purported proof by Vanderbilt University's Richard Arenstorf of the Twin-Prime Conjecture, which states that there are infinitely many primes of the form P, P+2, e.g, 5 and 7, 11 and 13, 17 and 19, or 29 and 31.
Arenstorf before today, so I'm in no position to assess the likelihood that his proof isn't just stuff and nonsense, at least not without getting a chance to actually read it through.
One thing I noticed in the abstract of the paper was that Arenstorf claimed that his proof depended only on methods from classical analytic number theory, and a quick scan through suggests that this is indeed the case, as it seems to lean most heavily on the theory of generating functions.

American mathematician Prof Richard Arenstorf may have solved a knotty problem over "twin" prime numbers, which has left mathematicians scratching their heads for centuries.
Mr Walmsley said he had studied the prime twins issue at university last year and it was "just amazing" the long-standing problem could be nearing solution.
The academic jury was still out on the validity of Prof Arenstorf's claimed proof, which was published only late last month, he said.
