The bad news: Alone with Everybody, the first solo venture by the Verve's ex-lead singer Richard Ashcroft, is not as good as the Verve's pinnacle departure album, Urban Hymns.
Ashcroft's solo debut has songs about love and life, and a general embracing of life where the early Verve albums were quite dark and dreary.
I am a huge Verve fan and think Ashcroft is by far one of the most honest, committed, and talented songwriters around- like most UK bands (As compared to money hungry US bands) he lays his emotions on the table for all of us to share.

Richard Ashcroft - Human Conditions - Review - Stylus Magazine
Looking back on The Verve’s career it is eerily apparent that Ashcroft slowly squeezed Nick McCabe out of the band over the course of their three albums, his vocals literally usurping McCabe’s unpredictable, reverb-saturated guitars in the mix until they dominated the sound.
Human Conditions sees Richard Ashcroft grabbing hold of his legacy, his ego, and what remains of his talent, and sailing even further up his own arse with them.
Ashcroft obviously sees himself as some kind of incisive commentator with a greater depth of understanding of the human condition than those around him.

Ashcroft made his debut as an independent force in 2000 with the excellent album Alone With Everybody.
I have no doubt that Ashcroft intended to be introspective but in doing so he’s lost the illusion of intimate honesty that I so enjoyed with many of his previous solo songs and releases with The Verve.
Even more troubling is that Ashcroft seems to have put a different spin on his music—it’s much less pop or rock than it is adult contemporary.

Richard Ashcroft: Alone with Everybody - PopMatters Music Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Although the prospect of Richard Ashcroft kicking the ass of Marshall Mathers is a scenario too bizarre even for MTV's truly appalling Celebrity Death Match series, that's precisely what happened recently.
Ashcroft has spoken of Gram Parsons as an influence on the making of this album and that influence is suggested by the combination of strings and B.J. Cole's pedal steel guitar on many of the songs.
Although Ashcroft's lyrics articulate that mythical moment via a laundry list of dire sixth-form clichés about the Big Apple, the urgency and excitement are, nevertheless, vividly conveyed by the emotional tenor of his vocals.

Former frontman Richard Ashcroft almost immediately begun work on his first solo record, enlisting the aid of his wife, keyboardist Kate Radley, Verve drummer Peter Salisbury, and pedal steel guitarist B.J. Cole, who filled in for McCabe on the last Verve tour.
Ashcroft's resulting album, "Alone With Everybody," is a sweeping, emotion-laden record that offers a snapshot of the artist at several different crossroads, both in terms of his career and his personal life.
Ashcroft: I think that thought is always with me. I think anyone who has chosen a certain path, they're always aware that there's a path running parallel and a completely other life waiting for them if they want it, if they're brave enough for it.

Richard Ashcroft - Keys To The World : album review
Of all the strange sights that Live 8 threw us during the summer (Madonna dancing awkwardly with a famine survivor, Snoop Dogg extolling the crowd to eradicate poverty by waving their "motherfuckin' hands in the air"), one of the strangest was Richard Ashcroft's guest appearance with Coldplay.
Ashcroft's preference for epic ballads means that the album's lack of variety becomes trying - Sweet Brother Malcolm and Cry Till The Morning both plod along drearily, although the second half is rescued somewhat by the stirring pop of Simple Song.
It will no doubt be welcomed by the Ashcroft faithful, but there's going to have to be a bit more variety next time if he's going to regain that 'coolest man in rock' status again.

Sure it’s full of unwavering confidence and some pretty songs, but the dull groove Richard Ashcroft seems to have settled into is striking.
[Ashcroft] possesses one of the definitive rock voices and has an undeniable gift for melody, but he pairs those talents here with truly insipid lyrics and uninspired MOR arrangements.

Ashcroft's music has always been driven by the darker side of his life - sadness, confusion, difficulties - and it certainly would be a shame if this journey ends at the third album mark The Verve's journey ended at.
Richard Ashcroft has made quite clear that he has no intention of trying to re-create the signature Verve sound, and that's why, once again, there are no heavy guitar sounds to be found on this album.
There's no question that Richard Ashcroft is one of the best songwriters of his time, and I think that he has the capabilities to do better work than this.

Richard Ashcroft: Alone with Everybody: Pitchfork Record Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Ashcroft has recruited members of the same London gospel choir that appeared on Blur's "Tender" (there probably aren't too many options when you record in England, I suppose) and where the gambit was questionable in that song, the question is decisively answered here.
Ashcroft's overdependence on pedal steel guitar is another puzzling touch; nothing else here-- beyond the occasional, equally gratuitous harmonica-- shows any sort of country influence.
So, Richard, if you're out there, please take this to heart: just because you can get a gospel choir or a guy to play pedal steel, it doesn't mean you should.

Which is fair enough because, like Diamond, Ashcroft doesn’t worry about coming across as hokey or sentimental.
