Organica News -- Book Reviews: Virus of the Mind
Brodie freely borrows from hardcore evolutionary materialist Richard Dawkins the concept of the meme.
Given that Brodie himself is one of the ruling elite-the technocrats that have replaced the disposed property masters-and is responsible for the state of affairs he decries by virtue of the fact that he was instrumental in developing Bill Gates' Microsoft company, this last comment above is disingenuous, to say the least.
Of course, as far as Brodie is concerned, the computer is merely a tool-whether or not our interaction with this tool is healthy depends on our memes which, according to him are, for the first time, capable of being mastered for our own conscious evolution.

Amazon.ca: Virus of the Mind: The New Science of the Meme: Books: Richard Brodie   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Richard Brodie's title implies that memes can be virus like in nature, and is a great metaphor with which to sell this book about the nature of memes.
However it turns out to be quite ironical that the author has become so "infected" by the meme of "meme as virus" analogy, that he becomes obsessed to the point where the idea turns into a kind of religion for him, and he becomes an evangelist in the promotion of the theory of memes.
Here Richard Brodie states, "if you switch off your internal dialogue, you've made the first big step towards freeing yourself of the tyranny of mind viruses." The technique he suggests is a simple meditation, "thought watching".
