Richard W. Bulliet is Professor of History at Columbia University, where since 1976 he has taught all periods of Middle Eastern history and for twelve years served as Director of Columbia's Middle East Institute.
Bulliet served four years as Executive Secretary of the Middle East Studies Association and has participated in the production of documentaries about the Muslim world.
Mary Marshall Clark is Director of the Columbia University Oral History Research Office, the first university-based organized oral-history program and archive in the world and an international center for research and scholarship in the field of oral history.

His commentaries have appeared in Newsday, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, and The Arizona Republic, and he has served as a consultant on Islamic matters for Time Magazine.
