Richard Serra's wall makes a statement ... and draws fire   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The two concentric white walls frame the plaza's one audacious palm tree and divide the plaza into zones of barren parched earth and lush geometric shade in a statement of graceful minimalism.
The recruiting of Richard Serra for the Plaça de la Palmera guaranteed the strong stamp of a contemporary artist whose "graceful minimalist severity" (Apgar) would effectively redefine the wasteland of drab sixties-era highrises.
The problem with Richard Serra's piece is that, ironically, it is far too site specific; it references the industrial brownfield that used to be St.Marti, it references the vacancy of the surrounding streets, and it calls to mind issues of the gentrification of the neighborhood in its split character between speculators and residents.
