The Right Reverend and Right Honourable Richard Chartres (born July 11, 1946) is the 132nd Bishop of London, being installed on September 26, 1996.
Chartres was educated at Hertford Grammar School and Trinity College, Cambridge before studying theology at Cuddesdon and Lincoln Theological colleges.
Chartres is also a patron and fellow of the Burgon Society for the study of academical dress.

During the first lecture of the originallecture series he made allusions to the College as a 'magical island like Atlantis' disappearing and re-emerging from the sea.This was a reference both to the Invisible College and Francis Bacon 's New Atlantis.
Chartres is also a patron and fellow of the Burgon Society for thestudy of academical dress.

Richard John Carew Chartres was installed as the 132nd Bishop of London on 26th January 1996 at St Paul's Cathedral.
In 1984, Richard Chartres became Priest-in-Charge of St Stephen's, Rochester Row, and later Vicar of that parish.
He has published lectures on Religion, Science and the Environment and also on the Ethical and Spiritual Dimensions of the New Information Technology Environment and is the author of The History of Gresham College 1597-1997.
