Richard Childress (born September 21, 1945 in Winston-Salem, NC) is a former NASCAR driver and successful team owner in NASCAR Nextel Cup competition.
Childress was such a driver, and started his first race as a replacement.
By 1971, Childress began racing on the top level as an independent driver, using the number 3 as a tribute to Junior Johnson's past as a driver.

On February 18, 2001, on the last lap of the Daytona 500, Earnhardt was tagged from behind and crashed head-on into the turn 4 wall.
Deciding to carry on, Childress changed the number of the car to 29, changed the paint schme from fl to white, and chose his Busch Series driver Kevin Harvick to drive the car.
