Jebb’s demonstrable affinities with contemporary culture suggest that his early compositions in Latin and Greek verse were not just the result of a one-sided education and preternatural powers of memory but also an aesthetic exercise in which he directly recreated the poetry that he addressed critically in his literary essays.
In Jebb’s case the region traversed may not have been as deep, and its width may at times have over-extended his abilities, but had someone of his talent and industry tried to be a Porson in the last third of the nineteenth century, he would have been abdicating his professional and cultural responsibility.
Jebb was also keenly interested in the staging of Greek drama, a movement that began in earnest in Britain in the 1880s in the wake of increased knowledge of art and archaeology; see Bibl.

Richard Claverhouse Jebb (1841—1905) is a leading figure in the history of British classical scholarship and education in the last third of the nineteenth century.
While Jebb was not radical in his methods or his opinions, he did effectively attach himself to the cause of reform — the reform of the classical curriculum, the widening of classical research and the general improvement of the educational system — causes all vividly illustrated by the works contained in this set.
With an extensive new introduction and a bibliography of Jebb's writings and archival materials by Robert B. Todd, Professor of Classics at the University of British Columbia, this collection of writings by a great Victorian polymath is an essential resource for all scholars working in the areas of Classics, cultural studies and Victorian studies.

His father was a landowner in Wales and Shropshire and his uncle, Sir Richard Claverhouse Jebb, was a renowned classical scholar, historian and MP - the identities of the two Richards were sometimes confused.

Richard Jebb died in Ellesmere on 25 June 1953.

Above you will see a list of UK book stores, along with their stock and price details for Sophocles' Complete Plays by Claverhouse Richard Jebb.
"The Complete Plays of Sophocles" presents a fundamental tradeoff: the translations of the seven extant plays of Sophocles were done by Sir Richard Claverhouse Jebb at the end of the 19th century, which means the translations are rather stilted.
The formalism of Jebb's translations does provide a sense of the inherent dignity of Greek tragedy; besides, editor Moses Hadas has substituted moderate for extreme archaism in vocabulary, syntax, and word order regarding the dialogue (the choral poetry remains essentially intact).
