(1758-1838), English antiquary, was the eldest son of Richard Hoare, who was created a baronet in 1786, and was born on the 9th of December 1758.
He was descended from Sir Richard Hoare (1648-1718), lord mayor of London, the founder of the family banking business.
Sir Richard died at Stourhead, Wiltshire, on the 19th of May 1838, being succeeded in the baronetcy by his half-brother, Henry Hugh Hoare.

Hoare, who was a fellow of the Royal Society and of the Society of Antiquaries, suffered greatly from rheumatic gout in the latter part of his life, and was deaf for some years.
In consequence of the death of his son, Henry Richard, on 19 Sept. 1836, the baronetcy devolved on his eldest half-brother, Henry Hugh Hoare, of Wavendon, Buckinghamshire, the head of the banking-house in Fleet Street.
In 1825 Hoare presented to the British Museum a collection of books on the history and topography of Italy, of which he printed a catalogue in 1812.

In 1717 Henry Hoare, second son of the founder of Hoare's Bank, of which he was a partner, bought the manor of Stourton, demolished the existing house, and proceeded to build the present Stourhead House, completed in the year of his death in 1725.
Sir Richard was not only a connoisseur, but also a scholar with a particular interest in the antiquities of Wiltshire: he collaborated with William Cunnington, the early archaeologist, and this resulted in the publication of the 2 volume "Ancient History of Wiltshire".
Colt Hoare, of course, was naturally coloured in his approach by the fact that he was of the land-owning gentry.

Colt Hoare was a distinguished scholar, eminent antiquary and county historian.
