  Courant biography
Richard was the eldest of Siegmund and Martha Courant's children and soon after the birth of their second son Siegmund sold his share in the family business in Lublinitz and they bought a business in Glatz.
At Göttingen Courant began by attending courses by Hilbert and Minkowski and he was also allowed to attend the joint seminar of the two mathematicians on mathematical physics.
Again Courant was the sole author and the contribution from Hilbert was in the form of lecture notes.

My father admired Jim Stoker enormously as a mathematician and a colleague, but he was also pleased about the fact that while he and Richard Courant represented the contribution of European emigres to the creation of the Institute Jim Stoker was a native-born American.
I even share with Richard Emery the distinction of having been named after his grandfather, since my middle name is Richard in honor of Richard Courant.
So, as a member of the Friedrichs family, as a member of the Courant extended family, and perhaps also as an honorary member of the Courant Institute family, I am pleased indeed to have been invited to be part of this Courant Institute reunion today.

NYU > Courant Institute > Biography of Richard Courant
In 1934, Richard Courant joined the faculty of New York University, where he began to build the nucleus of a small research group.
Courant's published papers were in variational problems, finite difference methods, minimal surfaces, and partial differential equations.
He encouraged the publication of mathematical texts and high quality monographs, one example of which is Methods of Mathematical Physics by Courant and Hilbert.

 Leonard Nelson
His [Richard Courant's] interest in philosophy was surprisingly strong, although -- as he told me -- "it didn't penetrate very lastingly." He took more courses with the phenomenologist Edmund Husserl than with any professor other than Hilbert.
In addition to the lectures of Husserl, Courant also regularly attended philosophical soirees in the rooms of the electric young Leonard Nelson, whose Habilitation was being delayed by the opposition of Husserl and the other philosophers but was strongly supported by the mathematicians, especially Hilbert.
Courant's views illuminate one aspect of Nelson's personality: he was a driven and extremely certain sort of man. Indeed, in some matters, Nelson verged on dogmatism, so confident was he of his results.

Courant is an especially important mathematician since he not only studied under the greats Minkowski and Hilbert - even serving as the latter's assistant - but founded the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in New York, modelled on the Gottingen Mathematical Institute.
Courant was a first rate teacher and mathematician, and his brilliance shows in his exposition.
Courant rightly recognizes that calculus should be taught in a logical, yet rigorous presentation from the beginning.

Courant makes the subject easier to grasp by giving proofs step-by-step, and by developing the intuition that gave rise to the calculus and guides its use today.
Courant himself, of course, was a great mathematician, although I don't personally consider him one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century; he was a better leader and inspirer of others than a creator of new mathematics.
Courant was a famous applied mathematician, and he introduced and developed the concepts in a way that is very well motivated and clear (not very common in mathematics texts these days).

This is something Kline does in his 'History of Mathematical Thought.' I find this information vital in answering the question 'what is mathematics?' If you really want to get a good idea of what mathematics is you should start with a general history of mathematics like Kline's book and quickly move on to Greek mathematics.
