Richard E. Kim, Lost Names: Scenes from a Korean Boyhood, Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1998.
Richard Kim shuns questions of whether the book is fictional or autobiographical, pointing out that while he wrote it as fiction, it has generally been regarded as an account of his own early years.
In the 1999 interview referred to earlier, Kim declared that one of his missions in life was "to teach Koreans to accept responsibility for their lives, to stop blaming others, the Japanese, the Chinese.

The Impact of the Bible on Asian American Writing: The Cases of Richard E. Kim, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, and Li-Young Lee
Born in present-day North Korea in 1938, Richard E. Kim came to the United States in 1955 and studied political science and philosophy at Middlebury College.
Kim advocates a view of history based on the relationship between God and humanity, in contrast to the Hegelian or Marxist view of history which he believes is godless and materialistic (Kim, Search 47).
Compared with Richard E. Kim, who uses the Bible to convey an existential message, and Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, who uses the Bible as one of many literary tools for her writing, Lee demonstrates a more personal interaction with Scripture.

Young Richard Kim spent the majority of his childhood in his native Korea while it was under occupation by the Japanese, who were not very nice to or tolerant of his people, no matter they were the majority and the occupying Japanese were the minority.
Young Richard is forced, along with his classmates, to bow in the direction of the Emperor each morning, recite an ode of allegiance to the Emperor and Japanese government, and, worst of all, to even change his family name.
All Koreans are forced to change their surnames to Japanese surnames, although Richard's father is clever and changes their family's name to one with the root meaning "rock," which of course is a reference to Saint Peter and the family's religious faith, a reference the Japanese won't get.

Independent critics would also ask what the rules of engagement are to be: for example, whether the U.S. is preparing to attack Lebanon for not acting against Hizbollah, which Bush calls a terrorist organization, but which is also the largest and most representative political party in south Lebanon.
Those interested in peace and conflict resolution need to recall their people to reality by demonstrating that this is a fantasy of the most dangerous sort, and that there are humane and practical alternatives to the New Imperialism.

One legacy of the Soviet-type economy is the highly inefficient, and sometimes value-destroying, structure of factor use and economic interaction [Hughes and Hare (1994)].
The model shows that high business risks inherent in transition economies and massive privatization could well explain the phenomenon, and that the government's efforts to eliminate the arrears are most likely to fail.
