A Social History of the Richard and Elizabeth Omohundro Family   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Richard and Elizabeth's migration to the central Piedmont frontier, their establishment of a small farm, and their participation in the formation of their new country, community, and nation may very well exemplify the lives of other similar middling families from this time period and region.
In April 1796 Richard Omohundro made a motion at a meeting of the Lyles Baptist Church that Lyles "should take under consideration the standing of the 'Fork Brethren for their not attending the church meetings.'" (56) Lyles Baptist discussed this issue and then appointed Richard to be a messenger for his church.
Richard Omohundro became involved in his frontier community by joining with other Piedmont settlers to make changes for the better, petitioning to form a still extant county, establishing the Lyles Baptist Church, and fighting the British in the Revolutionary War by both defending their land in the Piedmont and supporting the Patriot cause.

 Bush Cousin Calls Presidential Election
The telling part of this story is that the call was made by John Ellis, a freelance political advisor contracted by Fox News to head their election night "decision desk." Ellis is also first cousin to George W. Bush and Florida governor John Ellis "Jeb" Bush.
During the election, Ellis took to the editorial pages of The Globe, defending George W. against charges of cocaine abuse, writing that he personally knew Bush was not a "cocaine addict" since he has been close with his cousin for a very long time.
The specter of the Ellis, Ailes, Murdoch team bearing responsibility for the miscall that set in motion a Bush team victory script with George W. as heir apparent to the White House, is, in it’s own right, quite frightening.

In the eyes of many, patriotism is among the noblest of human motives, requiring as it does self-sacrifice and the transcendence of base self-interest.
In the opinion of others, patriotism is to be feared because it invites national and ethnic parochialism and promotes unthinking loyalty to military aggrandizement.
In this course we will explore these conflicting views of patriotism, and ask whether it is possible to reconcile these two faces of patriotism by distinguishing between ethnic nationalism and civic patriotism.
