 Richard Ernest William Turner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Richard Ernest William Turner (July 25, 1871-June 19, 1961) (VC, KCB, KCMG, DSO, Legion d'Honneur and Croix de Guerre avec Palme (France)) was a Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was 29 years old, and a Lieutenant in The Royal Canadian Dragoons, Canadian Army during the South African War (Boer War) when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 7 November 1900 during the action at Komati River, South Africa, when the guns were in danger of being captured, Lieutenant Turner, although he had already been twice wounded, dismounted and deployed his men at close quarters and drove off the enemy, thus saving the guns.

Turner, Sir Richard Ernest William, KCMG, VC, DSO, businessman and soldier (b at Québec 25 July 1871; d there 19 June 1961).
During the Battle of LELIEFONTEIN on 7 Nov 1900, Turner, a lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Dragoons, won the VICTORIA CROSS for deflecting a Boer attack on the Canadian guns, though wounded in the neck and arm (see SOUTH AFRICAN WAR).
In WWI Brig-Gen Turner commanded Canada's Third Brigade, assumed temporary command of the 2nd Canadian Division was promoted major-general in Sept 1915, and briefly commanded the Canadian Corps in Sept 1916.

When the attack started, Turner ordered his troops to dismount with the exhortation: “Never let it be said that Canadians let their guns be taken!” Nor did they.
On Aug. 17, Turner was given command of the 2nd Canadian Division with the rank of temporary major-general and later, on Dec. 16, took command of the Canadian forces in the British Isles.
Turner died at the Ste-Foy Veterans Hospital in Quebec City on June 19, 1961, at age 90.

The Lord Mayor (Mr Richard Jewson) at the Guildhall this morning presented Military Medals to Sergeant Walter Holmes (Royal Field Artillery) and Private Ernest Turner of the R.A.M.C. and formerly of the Suffolk's.
In October 1917, which the sergeant was again engaged with his battery in the same area he was gassed and lost the power of speech, but continued to serve his battery until the engagement was over, and was then sent into hospital, Holmes join the army two after the outbreak of war.
Turner volunteered to crawl forward through the entanglements which he did successfully, and bombed the snipers out to their position.

Matthews served as Rome correspondent from 1939 to 1945, with a brief interlude in India from July 1942 to July 1943.
In addition, there are items pertaining to Matthews that were sent to James from other sources, such as inter-office communications and "letters to the editor." Of particular interest are correspondence surrounding Matthews' controversial coverage of the battles at both Guadalajara (March 1937) and Teruel (December 1937), as well as two dispatches sent by Ernest Hemingway.
