Sadism and masochism - Open Encyclopedia
The terms sadism and masochism were first used consistently to describe these behaviors by the German psychiatrist Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing in his 1886 book Psychopathia Sexualis, a famous study of sexual perversity.
Sigmund Freud, a psychoanalyst and a contemporary of Krafft-Ebing, noted that both were often found in the same individuals, and combined the two into a single dichotomous entity known as sadomasochism (often abbreviated as SandM or S/M).

 Graz 2003: The Sacher-Masoch Festival
His contemporary, Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing (1840-1902), made use of Sacher-Masoch’s existential theme by defining it in terms of sexual psychology.
"Venus in Furs" (1869) and "Psychopathia sexualis" (1886) - two classics of erotic literature - are linked directly to Graz by their authors: the Lemberg-born Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1836-1895) lived from 1854 for decades in Graz, completed his doctoral studies here and taught history at the University of Graz.
Due to the worldwide importance of the term "masochism" - along with sadism the most popular contribution to erotic literature - Sacher-Masoch can rightly be defined as one of the most important personalities of Graz, the abbreviation S/M (sadomasochism) perhaps the most striking and well-known sign in the realm of erotica.

The first mention of our games in the scientific literature is probably that of Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing, a German psychiatrist who published in 1886 his book “Psychopathia Sexualis” a study on what was perceived at the time as “sexual perversions”.
In that book he coined the words sadism (after the French Marquis De Sade), and masochism (after the Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch) for some mental illness related to enjoying humiliation and pain.

The book, “Psychopathia Sexualis, A Medico-Forensic Study”, was mainly on homosexuality, which was his main interest, but in it there were cases of fetishism, bestiality, and other, among them the ones we are interested in, sadism and masochism.
