Richard Galliano - Biography - AOL Music
Accordionist Richard Galliano did for European folk -- specifically, the early-20th-century French ballroom dance form known as musette -- what his mentor Astor Piazzolla did for the Argentinean tango.
Galliano re-imagined and revitalized a musical tradition, expanding its emotional range to reflect modern sensibilities, and opening it up to improvisation learned through American jazz.
In fact, Galliano was more of a jazz musician than a folk one, although he blurred the lines so much that distinctions were often difficult to make.

 Dreyfus Records - Richard Galliano
Richard Galliano is an incomparable accordionist and composer, who has both revolutionized the traditional music associated with the accordion, and also legitimized that instrument in unconventional genres.
A Frenchman of Italian ancestry, Galliano is also a major figure in the movement that modernized musette, the turn-of-the century Parisian dance hall music that was France's answer to the tango.
Galliano, who started playing the accordion as a child, began improvising and adapting the accordion to jazz inspired by Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool sessions and the hard bop of Max Roach and Clifford Brown.

Galliano had no problem establishing rapport with the quartet of Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava, who joined him on the third night to play the film music of Nino Rota.
Galliano's arrangements of Fellini's favorite composer made the most of Rava, clarinettist Gabrielle Mirabassi, bassist Furio di Castri, and drummer Roberto Gatto, but it was the willingness of the band to open up the music and take it in new directions that made the night special.

The accordionist Richard Galliano extracts an extraordinary range of tonal subtleties and rhythmic complexities from his humble squeezebox, stretching from the pomp of a cathedral organ to the melancholy of a campfire harmonica or the sensual romance of urban dance.
Galliano’s tango nuevo septet captures brilliantly these complexities, from the ominously sensual double bass and violins harmonised as though for an 18th- century ballroom to the slaps, moans and slurs of vintage Piazzolla.
Galliano eschews the headlong rush of jazz at its most technical, and James Genus on bass and Clarence Penn on drums seemed to be kept firmly in check.

 Richard Galliano (english)
Richard Galliano was born in Le Cannet, France, on December 12, 1950.
With Piazzolla, Galliano realized that he hadn’t gone to Paris to play second fiddle to other people, but to invent a kind of music which, altough deeply rooted in tradition belonged to him, and him alone.
Richards greatest merit is therefore originality; synthesized all these experiences into a new European music made up of jazz improvisation and a great deal of Mediterranean tradition.

Richard Galliano has succeeded, through his musical emphasis on melody, rhythm, and harmony, in imposing his instrument in musical contexts that previously ignored it—jazz festivals (Marciac, Vienne, Montréal, etc.) and classical concert halls (Academia Santa-Cecilia in Rome, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Milan’s la Scala, etc.).
In 1983 Astor Piazzolla invited Richard Galliano to be the bandoneon soloist at the Comédie Française in his original music to accompany William Shakespeare’s "A Midsummer Night’s Dream", directed by Jorge Lavelli.
Richard Galliano has never worried about being the world’s best accordionist but rather has always been concerned with giving his audience the very best of himself, of "playing the music of his world", and of delving into his diverse musical roots—Italian, Mediterranean, jazz, French chanson, and classical music.

Richard Galliano : Passatori - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Galliano or his hero Astor Piazzolla wrote this richly romantic music, based in classical, chamber, and tango traditions.
Galliano wrote the three-part suite "Opale Concerto," the allegro movement an urgent 5/4 and 6/8 motif mixing with active, scattered strings; "Deuxieme" is a sober, swelling, throbbing slowed waltz; and "Troiseme" is back to a more energized 4/4 like a fast freeway jaunt, then settled and pining, and again anxious.
Piazzolla's suite "Concerto pour Bandoneon" starts with a "Premier" movement that is aggressive, pulse-pounding, and deliberate; another "Deuxieme" with Galliano's bandoneon, harp, and lead violin pulls heartstrings in tip-toe, cat-like delicate, but firmly wrought phrases; and "Trosieme," in presto mode, is loaded with passionate bursts.

The work of Galliano's mentor, Piazzolla, is the starting point, but its transformation in the hands of the Galliano septet is so profound and personal that it acquires a wholly new character through the multiple layers of polyphonic firepower of the five-piece string section, Hervé Sellin's piano, and the orchestral might of Galliano's own playing.
