Richard Gridley (January 3, 1710 – June 21, 1796) was born in Boston, Massachusetts.
Gridley was a military engineer during the French and Indian Wars from the reduction of Fortress Louisbourg in 1745 to the fall of Quebec.
For his services he was awarded a commission in the British Army, a grant of the Magdalen Islands, 3,000 acres (12 km²) of land in New Hampshire, and a life annuity.

Richard Baker had the best chance to extend the Regis lead, but somehow managed to sky the ball over the bar when being just a few feet from the goal line - it was most probably harder to miss the goal than put the ball into the net.
Ben Gridley sent over the corner that was partially cleared towards the rear of the penalty box where Wetherell deftly controlled the ball and powered the ball into the back of the net leaving the Bearsted keeper little time to react.

General Richard Gridley, the subject of this sketch, was born in Boston in 1710, and died at Stoughton in 1796.
Gridley was commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel in the English Army in 1745, and assigned to the comrnand of the Grand, or Royal, Artillery, which was opposite the harbor of Louisburg, and which was captured by English forces in 1745.
At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War Richard Gridley was appointed Chief Engineer, and he constructed the defenses at Breeds (Bunker) Hill the night before the battle, June 17th, 1775.

The Provincial Congress of Massachusetts, on April 13, 1775, voted to raise six companies for an artillery regiment.
They appointed Richard Gridley, a veteran of the siege of Louisbourg in 1745, to be the Colonel.
The regiment served in Bunker Hill but were not distinguished in this, their first action.

On 16 June 1775, Congress authorized LTG George Washington to appoint the first Chief Engineer, Richard Gridley, to the new Continental Army.
By midnight, Gridley and his men were at work and by dawn the next day had constructed the earthwork fortification which would protect American soldiers in the historic Battle of Bunker Hill.
From the construction of that strong redoubt on Breed’s Hill over-looking Boston, to the current missions in both the military and civilian arenas, the Corps has consistently proven its worth.
