Richard Hannay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Richard Hannay is the fictional secret agent created by Scottish novelist, John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir.
Richard Hannay was born in Scotland about 1877, his father was Scottish but his paternal grandparents were German and he was brought up to speak that language pretty fluently.
Richard Hannay was one of the first modern spy thriller heroes, and as such has heavily influenced the genre.

BBC - h2g2 - The Adventures of Richard Hannay - books by John Buchan
During the course of this pursuit Hannay adopts numerous disguises cobbled together from passers-by, survives a bout of his occasionally recurrent malaria, and manages to decode Scudder's notebook to learn the true fiendish nature of the organisation called the Black Stone and their role in the coming war.
Little did Bullivant or Hannay realise that this undercover work would lead Hannay into the highlands of Scotland (followed closely by the local constabulary), a confrontation in a packed London Underground station, and a climactic return to Switzerland and the Western Front for a final showdown with the man who calls himself Moxton Ivery.
For instance, in Hitchcock's version of the story, the changes to this chapter of Hannay's life include the nature of the enemy's plot, the name of the organisation, Hannay's nationality - in the film he is a Canadian - and the addition of a love interest.

A gang of German spies is after Richard Hannay and a notebook containing the secret of the 39 steps, and Hannay must solve the mystery of the steps if he is to save the British naval fleet.

 Buchan
Brigadier General Richard Hannay is once again yanked away from his command in the Great War to deal with an espionage problem, this time pursuing a genuine master of disguise and subterfuge called Moxon Ivery, one of those chameleon villains.
When being pursued from all directions, Hannay is given everything he needs to escape because (wait for it) a mug swipes his pocket watch and a British agent recognizes the emblem pasted inside that is the token of Her Majesty's Service.
And Hannay's sweet demure wife Mary is determined and toughminded enough to come to London on her own and start working on the case, simply because she is so concerned about the little boy hostage.

BookkooB : The Complete Richard Hannay - John Buchan : Compare Book Prices
Here is the perfect book for those who may have met Richard Hannay in his first and most famous outing - either in print or in Hitchcock's famous movie - and would like to follow his subsequent adventures.
Hannay is a very likeable hero, more complex than the "stiff upper lip" stereotype might suggest.
All in all, John Buchan's "shockers" (as their author called his Hannay stories) deserve a much wider audience and this Penguin omnibus edition is thus to be applauded.

Mr Standfast, the third Buchan novel in the General Hannay series, is a fascinating study in the era in which it was both set and authored.
Whilst at times farfetched and Biggles like in it's gingoistic tone, the reader is drawn into Hannay's affection for his cause.

The 39 Steps: Richard Hannay as an individual in conflict with society
Below is a short sample of the essay "The 39 Steps: Richard Hannay as an individual in conflict with society".
A symbol of Hannays vulnerability is that of a circling monoplane, it is searching for him, and seems to always be following.
The word "horribly" emphasises that the man is a grim enemy, and the word, "intelligent" highlights that he isn't only deadly, but is smart and quick.

John Buchan is the father of the modern spy thriller.
This is so even though the Hannay books are not, strictly speaking, about spies at all in the professional sense of the word.
They are about penetration of the enemy, about lonely escape and wild journeys, about the thin veneer that stands between civilsation and barbarism.

For movie buffs, mention of the Forth Bridge may evoke melodramatic images of Robert Donat, Kenneth More, or whoever else has played Hannay, Buchan's bridge-clambering secret agent, but for others the world over, this benchmark of Victorian resolve and inventiveness is arguably the most widely and easily recognised of all Scottish landmarks.
And unlike the spurious claims of a certain other Scottish national institution, it is indeed made from girders - 50,958.05 tons of steel in all, I'm assured, not to mention 6,500,000 rivets.

Alfred Hitchcock considered The 39 Steps to be one of his favourite films, partly because it launched his classic theme of the innocent man on the run from villains and lawmen.
Robert Donat stars as Richard Hannay in this freely adapted version of John Buchan's story.
Despite repeated remakes Hitchcock's riveting original remains unequalled.
