Harris was born in Limerick, Ireland, one of nine children of farmer Ivan Harris and Mildred Harris (nee Harty).
Richard Harris married secondly the American actress Ann Turkel, who was 16 years his junior, but that marriage also ended in divorce.
Harris died of Hodgkin's disease in 2002 at the age of 72, shortly before the U.S. premiere of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The actor Richard Harris, who died October 25 aged 72, was one of a number of his contemporaries who more often than was seemly traded their talent for a dubious celebrity.
Harris was continually in work, was more often than not turning in good performances, but was not in any way judging the material in which he was performing.
Harris may have played the part of the devil-may-care hard man, but there was a keen student of acting lurking not too far beneath the surface.

Harris told how he was with Frank and Malachy McCourt and discussing Limerick in the pub, and claimed that Frank McCourt had been derogatory and derisive in his attitude and remarks about Limerick.
Harris claimed also that the brothers had refused to pay the extra coffin charge when bringing their mother back to Limerick, alleging that the McCourts "decided to cremate their mother and bring her ashes back in their overnight bags".

Harris was prolific during the 1960s, performing in such diverse fare as "Major Dundee," "The Heroes of Telemark," the epic "Hawaii" and the Doris Day-starring comedy "Caprice." He became internationally known for his performance as King Arthur in the musical "Camelot," which won him a Golden Globe Award.
Harris also wrote two books, a novel, "Honor Bound," and a poetry compilation, "I in the Membership of My Days." Among his honorary awards, Harris was knighted in 1985 in Denmark and in 1987 received an honorary doctorate from the University of Scranton, where he was a guest professor of theater during the 1980s.

Harris' condition was serious enough to force the filmmakers of the upcoming Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, due out November 15, to use a double to complete some of the actor's final scenes.
Harris' celluloid résumé also includes the 1962 Marlon Brando version of Mutiny on the Bounty and Robin and Marian, in which he costarred with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn, and 1970's The Molly Maguires, also with Connery.

The actor, who long had a reputation as a hell-raiser, has said publicly he gave up drinking in 1982, going cold turkey after a "farewell" celebration in which he and friends indulged in two $370 bottles of Chateau Margaux.

This is the best and most thoughtful piece I have read in a long time regarding Richard Harris, his career as an actor and his unfortunate choice of roles.
Harris rushed himself into stardom, forgoing the years of training on the stage which would have given him a greater legacy to be remembered for once film stardom came his way, but I think that he was in a rush to prove to his father that he could be a success.
Further, Richard suffered in the knowledge that he was the only child in the family whose name his father forgot constantly.
