Guardian | Richard Herring   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-20)
Richard Herring, erstwhile partner of Stewart Lee and Fist of Fun co-host, has been on a religious journey.
He returns compulsively to a dream in which Jesus challenges him to a bicycle race, and also fantasises that he is Jesus, citing a passage from the Bible - "Behold a man gluttonous and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners" - to prove his point.
Herring may overestimate the impact that scatological Christ gags have on the non-religious, but his best sequences do derive their force from the gulf between the vestigial reverence that surrounds these subjects and the comic reality.

Herring's pere is the starting point for [his show] 'Christ on a Bike'.
As he tells it on stage, he has spent many an evening haranguing his dad about how self-evidently bogus Christianity is, how the stories in the Bible simply do not hang together - "what happened to that gold, frankincense and myrrh?" he demands.
So he starts off by asking how many believers there are in the audience; there is a tiny sprinkle of hands in New Milton, including the man in front of me who is, quite obviously, a vicar; he laughs helplessly at everything.

 Richard Herring - Talking Cock | Metro.co.uk
Herring first hit upon the idea while performing his last Edinburgh show, Christ On A Bike, at London's Arts Theatre - a venue he shared with Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues.
Herring took his research seriously enough to interview sex therapists and the curator of Iceland's Penis Museum (animal appendages only at present.) His most substantial fact-finding instrument was an Internet survey which notched up 2,500 replies in less than two months.
However worthy this approach may seem, Herring doesn't lose sight of the fact that, while one in four men in the audience might have a problem about their genitals, the other three quarters don't - so expect some of the survey's odder findings to provide the laughs.

Richard Herring: Talking Cock - comedy review | Metro.co.uk
After sharing a theatre with The Vagina Monologues last winter, Richard Herring decided it was high time he stood up for the humble willy, worshipped in ancient times, now consigned to glib references in toss-away double-entendres.
Dressed like an off-duty porn star in fl shirt, leather trousers and codpiece, he deflates suspicions of misogyny when he suggests that women are jealous of men's salty salamis - then attributes this theory to 'insane Austrian pervert Sigmund Freud'.
But Herring is trying to do more than twang the funny bones, and for the most part he's brought it off with intelligence, wit and a good deal of spunk.
