Hieb became an astronaut in July 1986, qualified for assignment as a mission specialist on future Space Shuttle flight crews.
Hieb first flew on the crew of STS-39, an unclassified Department of Defense mission which launched on April 28, 1991 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Richard Hieb, who flew three shuttle missions during the 1990s, came to Challenger and presented to two groups of students on site as well as countless others across the country who joined in by videoconference connections or via a stream over the Internet.
Hieb also presented a session for the Wheeling Jesuit University community and the general public at the end of his day as well as being interviewed on Wheeling, WV, radio station WWVA.
Hieb’s visit was sponsored by Lockheed Martin, the premier sponsor of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, to mark the 20th anniversary of the program.

Howard Dale Hieb was born September 24, 1964, in Mobridge, South Dakota, the son of Donald and Cecelia (Schaeffer) Hieb.
Howard is survived by his beloved wife Connie of Black Hawk; two sons Kolbe Hieb of Black Hawk and Jeramie Hieb of Brandon, South Dakota; one daughter Tandy (Hieb) Thompson and her husband Ryan of Brandon; and one granddaughter Keegan Thompson of Brandon.

On EVA 3, Thuot, Hieb, and Akers manually captured the satellite, which was subsequently repaired and redeployed.

Akers attached himself to the ASEM using a foot restraint; Hieb attached himself to the starboard sill of the payload bay; and Thout attached himself to the RMS arm which was operated from the cabin by Bruce Melnick.
Hieb returned to the bay for cleanup tasks and the Endeavour moved away (a small burn at 0516 and a larger one at 0539).

Ground control gave Thuot and Hieb the day off and went to work trying to figure out what to try next, though before they let the astronauts completely off, they asked them to see if they could fit three fully suited spacewalkers into the shuttle airlock (with all necessary equipment).
As Hieb and Akers continued to hold the satellie steady, Melnick would then guide Thuot with the robotic arm underneath the satellite where he would attach the capture bar and perigee kick motor.
Richard Hieb now works as the Director of Commercial Space Programs for Allied Signal Technical Services in Columbia, Maryland.

Astronauts Thuot and Hieb conducted the first spacewalk of the mission on May 10, 1992.
The primary task during this spacewalk was to have been the capture of the INTELSAT VI (F3) satellite, left in a useless orbit following a Commercial Titan III rocket failure on March 14, 1990.
Satellite ground controllers were able to dampen the wobbling of the satellite, and a second spacewalk by astronauts Thuot and Hieb was conducted on May 11, 1992.
