Richard Hanley Jaeckel (October 10, 1926 - June 14, 1997) was an American actor.
Jaeckel got his start in the business at the age of 17 while working as a mailboy at 20th Century Fox studios in Hollywood.
Jaeckel died in 1997 after a three year battle with melanoma cancer at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California.

In 1971, Jaeckel was nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar for his work in "Sometimes a Great Notion." The film, directed by Paul Newman and starring Newman and Henry Fonda, was based on a novel by Ken Kesey about a family of loggers carving a living out of the Oregon woods.
Jaeckel also appeared in "The Devil's Brigade," "All the Marbles," "Starman" and "Airplane II: The Sequel." Most recently, he was in "Delta Force 2" and "The King of the Kickboxers."
In 1943, Jaeckel was plucked from the mail room of 20th Century Fox to portray a teen-age Marine in "Guadalcanal Diary." After serving in the Navy from 1944 to 1948, he played a young Marine again in "The Sands of Iwo Jima" with John Wayne.

Although he had some reluctance to act, Jaeckel accepted a key part in the war epic Guadalcanal Diary (1943) and remained in films for over 50 years, graduating from playing baby-faced teenagers (like Dick Clark, Jaeckel never seemed to age) to gunfighters and hired killers with ease.
Jaeckel also received an Academy Award nomination as Best Supporting Actor for his funny but tragic performance in Sometimes a Great Notion (1971).
Jaeckel was relaxing and swimming with his family and friends, and as Newman watched him playing with his own children, he thought that Jaeckel would be just right to play his brother in the film.

Despite his initial reluctance to play-act, Jaeckel accepted the Guadalcanal Diary assignment and remained in films for the next five decades, appearing in almost 50 movies and playing everything from wavy-haired romantic leads to crag-faced villains.
Jaeckel passed away at the Motion Picture & Television Hospital of an undisclosed illness at the age of 70.

Jaeckel was widely known for portraying the sergeant in the 1967 movie, ``The Dirty Dozen,'' with Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson.

The script by Lamar Trotti and Jerome Cady is based on a memoir by Richard Tregaskis, a war correspondent who was embedded with the troops landing on Guadalcanal on 7th August 1942, though in those days he carried pencil and paper rather than the kind of Iraq embedding which required a full camera crew.
The film makes this trading off very clear by using a shot of the book in the opening title sequence.
