Richard Lower   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Richard Lower (always known as Dick to his friends) was born on the family estate at Tremeer, near Bodmin in Cornwall, was baptized on 29 January 1631 and died in London on 17 January 1691.
Lower is famous for his anatomical work on the brain and nerves, carried out as the assistant of Thomas Willis in Oxford in the early 1660s, and for his own anatomical and physiological investigation of the structure and action of the heart, on which he published in 1669.
Lower planned two initial experiments: one, in which two dogs of equal size should be bled ‘from an artery of one into a vein of another...

Richard's younger brother, Thomas, a physician, was later imprisoned with the Quaker leader George Fox for his religious beliefs.
Lower was invited to join the Royal Society early in his residence in London, and for a few years he was closely associated with the society and its various scientific activities.
Lower himself at first accepted this theory of a sudden, energetic enkindling of the blood in the closed chambers of the heart as an explanation for the lighter, more vivid appearance of arterial blood.

Lower could now see clearly that only exposure to the air in the lungs altered the blood's appearance; whereas blood still appeared venous as it left the right ventricle, it was already arterial as it moved from the lungs to the left ventricle.
Lower could also observe closely the continual, rapid, and vigorous pumping action of the heart, which now seemed clearly to be unrelated to a postulated effervescence in the cardiac chambers.
Lower begins with detailed descriptions of the muscular anatomy and nerve supply of the heart, comparisons of the fibrous structure of the human heart with that of other animals, and an account of the heart's contractive and expulsive movements.

If Lower did take his own life, he would be at least the third priest to commit suicide since the sex abuse scandal engulfed the Roman Catholic Church about a year ago.

 Francia Media:  Lorraine & Burgundy
Although it began as a Kingdom on equal footing with Burgundy and Italy, or, for that matter, with West Francia (France) and East Francia (Germany), Lorraine eventually lost this status and became a dependency of the Eastern Kingdom (900), albeit with the new elevated status of a Duchy, one of the Stem Duchies of Germany.
The obscurity of the history of Lower Lorraine seems especially unfortunate considering that today its territories are largely independent in the form of the modern Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

 Thomas Willis
His anatomy of the brain and nerves, as described in his Cerebri anatomi of 1664, is so minute and elaborate, and abounds so much in new information, that it presents an enormous contrast with the vague and meagre efforts of his predecessors.
This work was not the result of his own personal and unaided exertions; he acknowledged his debt to Sir Christopher Wren and Thomas Millington, and his fellow-anatomist Richard Lower.
Willis was the first to number the cranial nerves in the order in which they are now usually enumerated by anatomists.

The Oxford University of the novel is steeped in its own plots, schemes, and rivalries (think of the competition between Marco da Cola and Richard Lower, and Lower's alliances with Robert Boyle, as well as the university fellows' various reactions to the murder of Robert Grove).
The period in which the novel takes place is one wherein religion permeated every facet of society, from academia to the sciences, from art to philosophy.
Richard Lower's medical experiments seem primitive now, but in the context of this novel, they offer us both a fascinating glimpse of the development of medical procedures, as well as a portrait of how religion, and one's religious beliefs, informed and affected scientific research and experimentation.
