In 1891, Richard Lydekker catalogued and arranged the vertebrate fossils (apart from the fish, which had been the work of James W. Davis in 1888).
Lydekker did not record the origin of the specimens unless they had been donated by dignitaries.
The present collection compares closely with Lydekker's catalogue, but there are some problems caused by the fact that the letters used in Lydekker's catalogue were not attached to the fossils (apart from skulls, not mounted in plaster).

 Chrono-Biographical Sketch: Richard Lydekker
Richard Lydekker is not one of the great names in the history of zoogeographical inquiry, but he did explore the subject frequently, often as a function of his studies in vertebrate paleontology.
On returning from India he was charged by the Museum to prepare catalogues of their fossil vertebrate collections; this was accomplished in less than ten years.
In his later years Lydekker took an increasing interest in public venues, contributing to changes in exhibit design at the Museum and preparing many writings of a more popular orientation.

The term was invented by Sir Richard Owen in 1842 to describe these "fearfully great reptiles", specifically Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus, the only three dinosaurs known at the time.
The creatures that we normally think of as dinosaurs lived from late in the Triassic period (about 225 million years ago) until the end of the Mesozoic era (about 65 million years ago); but actually they live on today as the birds.
The term "Dinosauria" was invented by Sir Richard Owen in 1842 to describe these "fearfully great reptiles", specifically Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus, the only three dinosaurs known at the time.

 SVPCA 2000 - Field Trip - Dean William Buckland (b. 1784, d. 1856)
Before Richard Lydekker became keeper of fossil reptiles at the British Museum of Natural History, London, he was with the Geological Survey of India, where he worked on fossil mammals from the Siwalik Hills.
He joined the British Museum of Natural History in 1874 where one of his many achievements was to produce a catalogue of the fossil reptiles and amphibians held in the National collection: a work that ran to four volumes.
Besides these volumes, in which he describes several new dinosaurs from the Isle of Wight, Lydekker also catalogued the fossil bird and mammal collections, and earned for himself the nickname of 'The Lightening Cataloguer' (Anon 1915).

 "Fossils of Piltdown"
Study of these fossils and the circumstances of their discovery has brought to light facts confirming the unpublished suggestions of several palaeontologists that the identification of some of the fossils as teeth of Wealden [56] mammals is incorrect.
The presence of a single pulp cavity in the root reduces the probability that the tooth is a plagiaulacid molar, which has two roots, and strongly suggests that it is not the tooth of a mammal.
The mammalian affinities of two of the other fossils, M13134 and M20241, are doubtful, and the tooth described by Lydekker, M5691, probably was not part of the dentition of a Wealden multituberculate.

 Background
Lydekker (1893:3) and Depéret (1899) described species of Titanosaurus from South America and Madagascar, recognizing a “remarkable community of type which undoubtedly exists between the faunas of southern continents of the world”.
Titanosaurus and the Family Titanosauridae (Lydekker, 1893) soon swelled to include numerous constituent taxa, despite often tenuous associations and limited morphological overlap.
Because Lydekker (1877:38) did not specify one of these elements as the holotype (‘type’ in former parlance), the three elements together form the type series.

 Questions and Answers-Zoom Dinosaurs
Richard Owen, like other namers of dinosaur genera, named dinosaurs however they want to.
The names can reflect characteristics of the dinosaur (for example, Corythosaurus, meaning "helmet lizard," had a helmet-shaped crest on its head), the discoverer or another paleontologist (for example, Lambeosaurus, named for Lawrence Lambe), the place of discovery (for example, Albertosaurus, named for Alberta, Canada, where it was found), or just about anything the namer wants.
Yes, Sir Richard Owen coined the term dinosaur in 1842.
