Though Lyons loosely bases his novel on a series of murders committed by the so-called Green River Killer in the Pacific Northwest, he wanders far from the facts to examine the relationship between the pursuer and the pursued.
Lyons handles the tangle of sexual relationships to frightening effect, though the extensive and graphic scenes of sexual violence may estrange some readers.
Perhaps because this is slightly based on a real case, that of the Northwest's Green River Killer, Lyons lets things pass that even lesser writers would explore, choosing instead to drift along, looking at much finer pointssuch as how the mind of a mass murderer blows away all normal feelings in his pursuers.
